A second chance to make up for the mistakes of the past. A second chance at love.
Troy
I’ve settled in at Fort Dale with a great job at the clinic on base, and I’ve even made a few friends. The nearby city offers all I need to enjoy myself on a night off, if you know what I mean.
I was just starting to relax and think everything would work out, when he walked into the clinic. Oscar Reyes, the man I fell in love with six years ago and who walked out on me because he couldn’t handle the thought of being out.
I never thought I’d see him again, and now, he’s here, tossing everything I thought I knew on its head.
Oscar
There aren’t many things in life that throw me off. Despite a bit of a temper, I deal with things quite well. The IED that took my arm and left me with a permanent limp was hard, but after six months, I’m managing.
Well, I was. Until I ran into Troy again. Just seeing him was enough to realize six years wasn’t long enough to kill my feelings.
When I walked away, it seemed right at the time, and my reasons haven’t changed. This time, I’m determined to stand by that decision. Until I went and kissed him.
Oscar and Troy would have sworn six years was enough to make them forget. It wasn’t. When both men find themselves stationed at Fort Dale, staying away from each other suddenly seems impossible.
Nothing has changed, including their feelings, it seems. But is it enough?
REVIEW:
Note: This is the third book in this series, but it works perfectly well as a standalone.
Troy is happy in his job at the base clinic. He likes his coworkers and feels like he’s making a difference. He’s made some friends and he’s feeling comfortable. Sure, he might like a boyfriend, but he’s happy enough to be able to go out and meet somebody if he wants to for something casual. He’s only done the relationship thing once, and he got left in the dust when his boyfriend wouldn’t come out and left for deployment. He figures he’s gotten over it, until the same man walks into the clinic after six years.
Oscar has been sent to Fort Gale after recovering from the worst of his injuries from an IED. He’s lost his arm and he’s got some lingering pain and disability from the shrapnel and injuries to his leg/hip. He’s spent time with his brother while recovering from multiple surgeries and waiting to learn his fate with the military. When he reports to the General Winter’s office at Fort Dale, he’s not sure that he’s going to be a good fit. Christian (the General’s assistant) is tasked with showing him the ropes – but only after he’s cleared at the clinic. But when he goes to the clinic, he’s shocked to discover who is working at the clinic.
Troy is completely professional when he needs to clear Oscar for duty. He just wishes he wasn’t still so attracted to the guy. He doesn’t care about his injuries or his scars. He does care that Oscar is taking care of himself and isn’t trying to “tough it out” when he doesn’t have to. He encourages Oscar to take care of himself.
In the evening, Troy goes out to have a good time and runs into some trouble. As luck would have it, Oscar just happens to be there and saves the day. He also decides he gets to put in his two cents about Troy’s social habits. This does not go over well – Oscar gave up his right to have anything to say to Troy six years before when he walked out. Oscar does know this intellectually, but he can’t seem to stop his mouth or his possessive/jealous reactions to Troy and anyone else. Eventually Troy calls him on it, and Oscar kisses him. Somehow that six years has melted away and they are just as on fire for each other as they were back then. But Oscar still has issues.
Oscar admits that he wants Troy, but he’s still not ready to be out. Troy has matured a bit as well and he’s not hell-bent on Oscar coming out. Oscar has some family baggage that he’s really got to work through. His growing up years weren’t easy and he owes his family a lot. But as they move forward, it seems things won’t stay secret for long 😉
So I really liked this little story of Troy and Oscar and their second chance. What I loved was that we got the flashbacks to understand the dynamic in their original relationship as well as their current standing 🙂 Both men have matured a lot. They know where they are going in their lives to some degree, but something is missing. Neither has found anyone to fill the void after their breakup. Both have kept their heads down and moved on with their careers, but it only takes a small spark for their relationship to burn hot again. Their chemistry was great. I loved the way the secondary characters were supportive and also basically told them to pull their heads out of their asses 😉 Loved loved the way Oscar stepped up especially 🙂
Once again, Michael Ferraiuolo did a fabulous job narrating this book. A number of the characters from the first book show up in this one as well and they are pitch perfect. I’m really enjoying this whole series as audiobooks and I’m looking forward to number four. Recommended especially fans of military stories and second chances and hurt/comfort.
