Jonah Pastern is a magician, a liar, a windwalker, a professional thief…and for six months, he was the love of police constable Ben Spenser’s life. His betrayal left Ben jailed, ruined, alone, and looking for revenge.
Ben is determined to make Jonah pay. But he can’t seem to forget what they once shared, and Jonah refuses to let him. Soon Ben is entangled in Jonah’s chaotic existence all over again, and they’re running together—from the police, the justiciary, and some dangerous people with a lethal grudge against them.
Threatened on all sides by betrayals, secrets, and the laws of the land, the policeman and the thief must find a way to live and love before the past catches up with them…
REVIEW:
Remember Jonah from Flight of Magpies? The thief and wind walker that caused so much trouble for Crane, Stephen and the rest of them? Well, this time we follow him and the man he betrayed so horribly. A man who swore revenge for how completely Jonah ruined his life. If only he didn’t still love him. And hate him, both with a passion.
As you might imagine, sparks of all kinds fly whenever Ben and Jonah were in the same room – and even when they weren’t. It’s clear that they both have deep feelings for each other, but they have so much hurt between them as well.
Like Ben, I wasn’t all that fond of Jonah when this book started. I had a few bones to pick with him for the trouble he caused in the past. But as the book went on, the more I saw what he hid deep down. I’m not making excuses for him, but I did not want to see him jailed or worse. I wanted him to have his happily ever after, wanted him to make up with Ben. Make amends.
Unlike the other books set in this universe there’s no big bad to battle, no murderous plot to stop. No, for the most part it was about Jonah and Ben finding their way back to each other – while on the run from the law that wanted to separate them for a variety of reasons. Being on the run with only the clothes on your back is always portrayed as this romantic plotline in books, having only each other to count on, and so forth. And it is romantic – in books, I can only imagine the horror of it actually happening RL. But this is fiction and I loved how Ben and Jonah slowly grew closer, how they learnt to trust each other. It was beautiful. And I loved how they carved out a place for themselves in the town, how they were accepted. This book was everything a paranormal historical romance should be.
Cornell Collins is a fantastic narrator, which, if you’ve listened to him yourself or read my other reviews of this series, already know. His pacing is spot on, and he captures the characters just right. I could go on, and on about his skills, but suffice to say Cornell Collins and KJ Charles is a match made in heaven.
Once again KJ Charles delivered a great and entertaining story and I can’t wait to listen to more.
