Wilder Pratt has given up trying to get his life together. Passed up for a promotion, left by his long-term boyfriend, nothing in his life seems to work how he planned. Wilder is just treading water . . . right up until the moment he trips over a dead student outside his office with a golden would-be murderer standing over the body.
Hermes has been running his whole life—from duty and danger, from a father who mistrusts him and siblings who outshine him. But when the students at Banneker College of magic start dropping dead one after another, Hermes’s ass is on the line. He finds himself playing bodyguard to a man who suspects him of murder, but that doesn’t seem enough to keep Professor Pratt’s hot hands off him.
An ancient evil has risen from the depths of Tartarus, and he’s coming for Banneker. The only thing standing in the way of a titanic apocalypse is one disappointing part-time professor and a god who’d rather abandon the world to its fate. But if they work together, they may just save everyone.
REVIEW:
Well, these two have done it again, as far as I’m concerned. They have become another set of one clicks for me, because how they write is so intriguing and powerful. Each story is a paranormal work of art to me. I love each and every one, since I got involved with Lords of the Underworld and The Rowan Harbor Cycle. I love paranormal stories, and the fact that this involves the Greek gods and goddesses, helps tremendously. I love the history of them and seeing the twists that people make with them and this is a good one.
Wilder is one of those people you just want to go pull the broomstick out of his butt. He’s very haughty and snobbish. Conceited, if you will. And in some ways, he has the right to be. He is a very powerful fire elemental after all. But his power, quite frankly, is wasted teaching. But he never wanted to be in the military. But his life is about to change drastically, when he finds a dead student on the floor of his office hallway, with a man looking over him. And that man has no problem making a few smart alec comments and leaving! Left him with a dead body and having to talk to the police for hours. If that wasn’t bad enough, he goes to a bar to unwind, meets the man again, only to have a passionate encounter and to be left with a dead body,…..again. Now the police are suspecting Wilder and Wilder is not happy. Especially when he finally finds out who the man is and what he is. And what is going on. It’s not a pleasant experience, and Wilder is about to be pulled into a world he never imagined. All because of running into Hermes. But he likes the quirky god, although you might never catch him admit it. But time is running out, as they find themselves going against an evil that the gods themselves could barely beat. And they expect Wilder to. Can Wilder do it or will he be the next to go down forever?
In any story I’ve read, Hermes is such a pain in the butt and it cracks me up. Because he is such a trickster, it’s almost funny. But it saddens me in a way as well because a lot of the time, he’s just seeking attention from someone. No one can call Zeus the model parent, after all. But what I love about this story is the connection between Hermes and Wilder. You have a trickster, who has no problem knocking people down a peg or two with his words, and Wilder, who needs a broomstick removal as bad as anyone. And as much as they spark off each other in annoyance and anger, there’s this underlying burn there between the two of them. And neither of them want to admit they are fond of the other. But they are good for each other. Hermes, keeps Wilder grounded and builds him up as well. And Wilder shows Hermes that someone can care for him without there being a catch. They’ve learned that neither have had the best role models as parents and they are there for each other in ways no one else has ever been. And because of Wilder, Hermes has proven everyone wrong about him. His siblings all seem to want to put him down because he’s not a warrior, but with Wilder, he proved his willingness to stay. Even if only for Wilder himself. And I love it. Because in each other, they both found what they needed.
I also love how they written out the other gods and goddesses. All are so much what history makes them out to be and I love that they seem to be so dead on with descriptions of how these guys are.
It’s a great story and I can’t wait to see where this series is going to lead next.
