When it becomes apparent that Prince Llyr of Aegeaus cannot stop the political wedding between himself and a tyrant-to-be, he races for the one place he thinks his father won’t easily find him—the surface. After ingesting a spell to give him human legs for seven days, he quickly has to figure out a way to make those seven transform into an eternity.
After nearly drowning in his new human form, he’s saved by a handsome captain and the darkly dangerous commander of a passing ship. The two close friends have sailed the high seas for over twenty years and had many adventures together. The escapade they enjoy most is sharing a third in their bed.
Unable to deny his curiosity—Llyr has to find out how it feels to have sex without a tail—he sets off to seduce the gorgeous pair. But when it becomes apparent his mere presence pushes the lovers apart, he can’t risk destroying the love they have for one another just to appease his own needs.
Yet he can’t walk away from the men he’s mystically drawn to, either.
Once Llyr’s father finally discovers his whereabouts and exposes the deadly consequences of his dalliances—will he choose to face the danger or run back home under the sea?
REVIEW:
It’s always difficult, when re-telling an old story, to find a balance between keeping it true to the original, and making it your own. In this, I think, the author has succeeded. There are elements of The Little Mermaid, but Prince Lyr is no Ariel.
The characters are one of the greatest strengths. There was potential for them to become stereotypes, but they avoided that easily, standing alone as their own creations. Their individual personalities were perfect foils for one another and the interpersonal stories were told well.
Generally, the writing wasn’t bad, although I felt it was immature and clunky in places and the dialogue could be stiff, but there are so many charming little tidbits (Prawnsonby the butler/mentor was hilarious) that it’s hard to care too much.
My main issue is that many of the surprises, especially at the end, felt like contrivances, shoehorned in to make a neat package. If the revelations had been spaced out and less overt it would have been so much better
On the whole this was a charming story with plenty of heat and engaging characters, all with a story to tell. I would certainly recommend reading, especially if you’re a fan of The Little Mermaid or of fairytales in general. The book is full of easter eggs and teases, most of which work well.
