REVIEW:
Short stories are not always my cup of tea. Mostly because it is really challenging for authors to cram, what should possibly be a full-fledged story into a book of 63 pages. But this story was released as a standalone short, to introduce us to new characters from the Hours of the Night series. Haunted is the first book in the new Haunts and Hoaxes series. You do not need to read the Hours of the Night series to begin this series. In this series, the main characters are Noel Chandler and Adam Morales. Noel is a former LAPD cop and Adam is a college professor with a TV show, aptly named Haunts and Hoaxes.
The backdrop of this story is a mystery that needs to be solved regarding a mansion involved in a fire. This mystery is what brings our main characters together and puts them on the path to romance. In addition to the mystery, the story does include sexy times that just break the surface of the chemistry Noel and Adam have with each other.
I felt a little let down by the limited information on our main characters. Which is also a victim of the short story format. I wanted to know what made these guys tick and what made such opposites attract. We get brief glances at Noel’s paranormal gift and Adam’s love of history. The world-building was good and I loved that New Orleans is the backdrop of this story. Because next to Salem, Massachusetts; you are not going to find a better city to incorporate paranormal activity into. But this story left me with a lot more questions than answers, which I hope will be answered in the next book in this series.
I did enjoy this story and it definitely left me wanting more of Noel and Adam and I am excited to see where their adventures take them. I am looking forward to the next book in this new series, for that very reason.
