His dead lover is coming back to rock his world all over again.
When rock star and recovering alcoholic Fisher Kelty is found dead, overdosed on booze and pills, the coroner rules it an unfortunate accident. But Fisher’s death leaves his partner, Casey, with more questions than answers as he tries to put his shattered world back together.
As the anniversary of his passing rolls around, and conspiracy theories rear their heads, Casey begins to dream of Fisher. Strange things start happening in the home they shared. Is Fisher trying to contact Casey, and if so, why?
Casey’s friend Will believes that’s the case. He encourages Casey to visit a psychic and find out whether Fisher has a message for him. Casey hopes this will finally put to rest all the doubts he has over why Fisher died. However, as Fisher becomes an all-too-real presence in Casey’s life once more, eager to pick up where they left off, Casey realizes nothing is as simple as it seems where a handsome, sexy ghost is involved.
REVIEW:
This book was short and sweet. It is part of the Some Like It Haunted anthology, but I haven’t read any of the other stories.
Fisher Kelty is a recovering alcoholic. His boyfriend, Casey, while still on edge, had faith that this time Fisher will stay on the wagon and they can make a go of it properly this time. That dream is shattered when he gets up one morning to find Fisher dead with a bottle of vodka and a handful of pills at his side. Although it’s deemed to be an accident, Casey can’t throw the feeling that it was somehow his fault, that he had pushed Fisher too hard and he’d taken his life either willfully or carelessly. Casey is shattered.
When he finally starts putting his life back together, a year after Fisher’s death, it’s shattered again by the resurgence of media interest and disturbing, hot and very detailed dreams/visions of Fisher that makes it difficult for Casey to keep his own recovery back on track.
After visiting a psychic, Casey decides to summon Fisher to find out what his unfinished business was. What resulted was unexpected and scorching hot.
Somehow, this book managed to be both full of story and full of sex. There is no denying that it is hot as hell, but the sex was surrounded by characters and a story that had a lot of emotional depth.
I loved Casey from the start. I didn’t have the same emotional connection with Fisher but that was possibly because I knew he was going to die. Nevertheless there was a fondness that was sufficient for me to feel his loss.
However, when Fisher returned, although the action was hot, there was something in Fisher’s behaviour that made him somehow sinister and I never quite bought that Casey had his HEA or even HFN with Fisher’s manipulation in the background. There was just something off for me and I’m left with the concern that Casey is going to end up hurt somehow, especially as Fisher’s reappearance has robbed him of any possibility of getting over him and back to a normal life.
I would very much like to see the situation develop to the point where I’m satisfied that Fisher means no harm and that he and Casey can settle down to a future that brings happiness to both of them, I’m not saying that the book can’t stand alone as is, or that the ending is not satisfying. It’s quite possible that I read too many ghost stories and am used to ghosts being up to no good, and other readers will warm to Fisher, or might not even care given the proliferation of hot, well written sex.
There is no doubt that this is a well written book and is short enough to be devoured in one chunk. It’s probably best not to read it on a train or leave it open at work, but otherwise settle down with a glass of wine and enjoy.
