Take Us There by Louisa Masters
Joy Universe, Book 4
Dominic Hurst is a man who’s always up for a challenge. Step in as director of the world’s second-largest theme park complex? No problem. Clean up the mess the previous director left behind? Sure. Have his seventeen-year-old daughter move in with him in a last-minute custody change? Bring it on. Face off with a town full of matchmakers? Uh… what?
Oliver Jeffries is a man more than comfortable with his life. Teach teenagers to fall in love with literature? Absolutely. Tackle mindboggling tasks as head of the English department? Pass him the whip. Placate parents convinced their perfect children can do no wrong? Pfft. Child’s play. Agree to a friends-with-benefits arrangement with the most talked-about man in Joyville? Uhm… maybe in secret?
When Dom and Oliver meet, there’s no question that friendship won’t be enough. But the citizens of Joyville don’t know the meaning of “private,” and dating the director puts Oliver firmly in the spotlight. With the whole town watching and laying bets, is their fledgling relationship doomed to fail?

I shake my head and look at Jason. “What just happened?” “I’m so sorry” is all he says before Dimi seizes my arm and drags me farther into the room. “Not to worry!” he declares, sounding just like his mom. “We’ll definitely make sure you get home safely. Now, why don’t we set you up right here?” I’m led over to the dining table. “I think you even know some of these people! Luke was just saying that Mila is in one of your classes.” He pushes me into a chair as Luke makes a sympathetic face, but I can see that he’s also trying not to laugh. Dimi gives me a five-second rundown on what to do—wrap the pile of small gifts in the middle of the table—and then hightails it off to the kitchen counter, where Jason is standing with another pile and several rolls of wrapping paper. I glance around the table at the amused faces surrounding me. “Hi.” Luke and Grant, I know from that night at the school and also the parent-teacher conferences we had a few weeks ago. There are two more men, one of whom I recognize as Derek Bryer, who’s been an assistant director at JU for years and who last year was involved in a very public murder debacle. And sitting next to me is Dom. He leans closer and murmurs, “I am so sorry. Dimi and his mom are clearly off their rockers.” I’m just wondering what he means by that—although I’m inclined to agree—when Derek smiles broadly and says, “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Derek, and this is Trav.” He gestures to the man beside him. “We’ve heard a lot about you.” I manage to smile back, although I’m definitely thrown off stride. “You have? That’s… surprising.” Trav rolls his eyes, then winks. “They tell me you’ve lived here long enough to know that gossip is the town hobby,” he says. “Yeah, but I’m not—” My eyes go wide, and I look over at the kitchen counter. Dimi immediately turns away, as though he’s been watching but doesn’t want to get caught. Jason’s shaking his head again. I turn to Dom. “Are they matchmaking?” I hiss, and he winces. “Badly,” Derek says, “but yeah, that would be my guess.” Oh my god. I thought the gossip about me and Dom dating had died. I thought it was over. Not that one of his employees and the town’s queen of meddling would decide to matchmake!
Louisa Masters started reading romance much earlier than her mother thought she should. While other teenagers were sneaking out of the house, Louisa was sneaking romance novels in and working out how to read them without being discovered. As an adult, she feeds her addiction in every spare second, only occasionally tearing herself away to do things like answer the phone and pay bills. She spent years trying to build a “sensible” career, working in bookstores, recruitment, resource management, administration, and as a travel agent, before finally conceding defeat and devoting herself to the world of romance novels.
Louisa has a long list of places first discovered in books that she wants to visit, and every so often she overcomes her loathing of jet lag and takes a trip that charges her imagination. She lives in Melbourne, Australia, where she whines about the weather for most of the year while secretly admitting she’ll probably never move.
