BLURB:
Federal exorcist John Starkweather is consumed by the search for the truth about his past. A new lead takes him away from New Orleans, to confront the twisted man who experimented on him as a teen.
Left behind yet again, Caleb and Gray throw themselves into the hunt for a murderous demon lurking deep in the swamp. But they can’t shake their growing fear that the more John’s memories return, the further he pulls away from them.
As John digs deeper into the secrets surrounding the Center where he was held captive, the danger around him grows. Because someone wants the truth buried—and they’re willing to kill to keep it that way.
REVIEW:
This book is short but goodness it packs a lot in. John’s continued search to find answers about this past throws up some curved balls that start to break him apart. Caleb and Grey hunt monsters, with Night slowly becoming more proactive and less of an inconvenience.
I have to admit that, although he is the most inhuman monster in the cast, I have truly begun to warm to Night although he will never be my favourite character, that spot being firmly taken by Caleb. His view of looking at the world is intriguing and his contrast with Grey highlights nuances in both.
Even though short, this book was not an easy read as it dealt with some heavy material. The author’s books have often hovered on the borders between romance, adventure and horror and this one dips a little more into the horror with the unfolding story of past atrocities that has John wondering if they are all really in the past.
After finding more of his memories John decides to track down the rest of his childhood companions and ends the book with new resolve.
I believe that John has found some closure regarding certain aspects of his past, but more issues have been thrown into the light and his loyalties are being tested, never a good position to be in when all you have is questions.
We are now on the third SPECTR series and the author is still throwing up new facets of the characters that keep them fresh. They feel like old friends now and never disappoint.
My only real complaint about this book is that it is too short. I’m as thirsty as John for more information about the past and who is responsible for the sinister occurrences of the present. I’m waiting with bated breath for the next in the series and will continue to recommend both the books and the author.
