Eli I stepped into the street and stared after the vehicle. The moment traffic cleared, I reached into the puddle and removed a shoe from the muck. I grimaced. Just perfect. What was I supposed to do with this? I returned to my friends, who were waiting in the back of the room near the exit to the alley. In my hand was the sopping wet shoe, covered in grime, tiny pebbles skittering to the floor occasionally. “That’s all you got?” Zeke asked with a laugh. “You really know how to get ‘em.” “He got into a cab and left,” I muttered. “Guess you’ve got a Cinderella on your hands,” Rudy said. “He ran off and left his shoe behind.” “That’s where the similarities end.” I shook my head, spraying them with water droplets from my hair. Drew cried out in surprise, but the others simply wiped their faces. “Now we can be done with this foolishness, I suppose.” “Oh, no way you’re getting out of this now. You agreed. Next one to walk through the door. He was next.” “How… how do you expect me to…?” Drew shrugged. “I don’t care. You’ve got a possession. Hire a tracker for all I care. But you agreed. You’ll figure it out. I have faith in you.” Drew clapped me on the shoulder. “Shit,” I spat. Drew grinned widely, his fangs catching the dim light. “Let’s go. I’m starving.” I walked away, shoe still firmly in hand. Our clan lived in a large American Craftsman in a suburb about a human’s half-hour drive from the bar. For a vampire unafraid of drawing attention, it would have been a short sprint. The others would likely find their victims, feed, and run home. I hailed a cab instead.
