Accidentally summoning a demon was NOT my plan. Now he says I need his help, and won’t leave—and I’m oddly alright with that.
I’m new to this magick thing. I’ve aced my classes in college because they’re normal, predictable, safe. Fire magick is chaos. The first time I try to wield my magick on my own, I make a mistake. A big mistake. Now I have this leather wearing demon in my life. He’s gorgeous, dangerous, and the way his thighs and ass look in those tight pants should be illegal. I want to learn, and he seems more than willing to teach me everything I need to know…about magick and so much more. If only learning my powers was the only thing I’ve got to handle.
There’s someone trying to kill me.
When we go in search of answers and help, we find out we’re part of a bigger picture, and there’s a prophecy (of course, there’s always a prophecy). I’m a certified nerd. I’m not cut out to save the magickal world. The way my leather daddy demon protects me from every threat makes me feel confident we can navigate this new world… if we stick together. But can you ever really trust a demon?
REVIEW:
When a small, slightly nerdy guy & a huge leather daddy demon show up at the door, you know there’s a backstory. At the end of the wonderful 1st book in the Familiar Magick series, we’re left with the unknown – and this book works to satisfy their backstory and moves the major plot forward. How did they come to land on Anth & Tobias’ door? Is there more to what they appear?
I didn’t expect to love this series as much as I do. I was enchanted with the first book and ready to dive in to the second. The book mostly does not disappoint – sassy side characters and some silly situations lighten a heavy premise and history. William and Tragin do have a back history they need to work out. There’s lots of growth on both their sides as they navigate getting to know each other with the newly discovered magick that William finds he possesses and Tragin knows a lot about the reasons behind the unknown. There is some mild dom / sub action, but it’s not enough to turn off the squeamish, fitting the characters really well.
This book is a lot shorter than the first and doesn’t quite explore the lore of the magick quite as much as the first. We get some mystery but not on the same level. There was such a good mix in the first that this book falls a little short in that I feel like it could have explored more about the characters with some of the background and progress they make. I do love the premise that there are sets of soon-to-be mates that play a central role in saving the magick world, but maybe this part came too easily? Don’t let my wondering hold you back from reading this series, but know that you’ll flow pretty quickly through this 2nd book. We do get some further answers but there’s a lot more to be told.
I’m still super excited to read the next one. The problem always with newly written series is that you have to wait for the next book, which is a bummer – but don’t we all like a little pain before pleasure?
