The trip of a lifetime is far from smooth sailing
Blurb
Jamie Johnson is going to sea for the first time in his life. Atlantic Star is one of the most luxurious cruise ships in the world, and a two-week trip to Iceland offers Jamie the perfect escape. His life has been on hold since the death of his husband and a working holiday onboard a state-of-the-art ship is an opportunity to explore the world he’s been hiding from. A chance to think about his future and decide what he wants to do with the rest of his life.
When Dexter Fordyce steps onboard, all he wants is a good time. The cruise is his first holiday in years, and workaholic Dexter is ready to relax and enjoy himself. If he can manage a little fun with someone like Jamie, even better. Jamie is flattered by the attention. Dexter is handsome, charming and great fun and proves impossible to resist.
Jamie’s hopes of romance died with his husband. The prospect of a shipboard passion is attractive, but Jamie’s heart has been broken for too long and he can’t take the risk of falling in love. With stormy weather ahead, the two men are set for a voyage they will never forget.
“How old are you?” Dexter said. “If you don’t mind me asking.”
“I don’t mind,” Jamie said, lifting his glass and swirling the whiskey around the bottom before taking a sniff. “I’m forty-one.”
Nice. Pretty much what Dexter had guessed. For years he’d been attracted to men his own age or younger, but with time he found them increasingly dumb and unengaging. Pretty to look at, for sure, but not much else. Younger guys were often terrible in bed. So many of them lay there, expecting to be worshipped, offering little more than hard abs and a stiff dick. Men, real men, like Jamie, were so much hotter.
Does he fancy me? Almost certainly yes. Maybe?
Dexter found it hard to tell. Jamie might just be a friendly guy. There was a spark between them. Dexter was sure of that, but without the benefit of an app where two guys laid it out in the open before they ever met, who could tell? He was useless at reading a situation for real.
“This is nice,” Jamie said, savouring the whiskey.
Dexter watched his throat, his Adam’s apple as he swallowed. He grabbed his own drink. “Mine too.”
The pianist finished his set. After a small round of applause, he announced he would be back the following evening at seven-thirty and left the stage. Piped music began to play. Sinatra, or someone like that. Those old crooners all sounded the same to Dexter.
“Have you got any plans for tomorrow?” Jamie asked, turning back to Dexter. His dark blue eyes appeared deep purple in the low light.
“I don’t even know where we are tomorrow,” Dexter admitted.
Jamie’s brow shot up. “You don’t?”
He shrugged. “I didn’t study the itinerary. I know we’re still in the UK.”
“Dundee,” Jamie said.
“Ah, right. Well, I wasn’t planning to get off.”
“You weren’t?” he sounded even more shocked.
Dexter blushed and hoped it wouldn’t show in the dim light. “I want to work a few hours. Check my emails, fix up some appointments. I thought tomorrow might be the best chance. I don’t want to miss out when we get to Iceland, so I’m happy to sacrifice Dundee. I doubt there’s much there.”
“You won’t ever know if you don’t leave the ship.”
“You can tell me all about it at dinner.”
Jamie frowned. He’s not impressed.
“I thought you said this was a holiday. Don’t you have someone looking after things while you’re away?”
“Of course, but I can’t ignore the agency completely. I have to check in and make sure it’s running okay.”
“You haven’t been gone a day yet. I doubt it can fall apart in that time.”
“There’s only one way to find out. Keeping on top of it.”
“It seems a shame, that’s all. I take it you haven’t been to Dundee before.”
Dexter shook his head.
“You might never get the chance again,” Jamie continued. “It would be a pity to waste it. Life is short, you know. You should make the most of every situation when it arises.”
