Big, bald, tattooed, and more than a little possessive, Toby Tomlinson isn’t what you’d call a lady’s man. In fact, he usually got too serious before they were ready. One day, upon returning home from work, Toby finds a young woman kneeling to pick up mail she’d apparently dropped. Taken with her red hair and slender body, he says hello as he grabs his own mail. The woman jumps and bangs her head against the open door, then lets loose with a string of expletives. She turns around and Toby discovers…the person he’s been ogling isn’t a woman at all, but a man.
Kyle Roga’s heard it all before. High school was filled with taunting classmates who could tell Kyle was far too fabulous to be straight. And now, here he was, being pawed at by a man who stole Kyle’s breath away. He ticked every box Kyle had, and a few he didn’t even know he wanted ticked. The problem? Kyle’s been burned before by straight men who think you’re good enough for sex, but not for a relationship. He’s been bitten way more than once, and he doesn’t want to go down that path again.
Two men, each with a different way of looking at love, find themselves having to reexamine what they always believed about themselves. Will it be enough to bring them together? Will each discover what they’ve been doing isn’t living, but waiting on life?
REVIEW:
I loved this book so much. It’s another on of those reminders that you should never judge a book by it’s cover and that you shouldn’t put yourself in a box about someone you may love. You could surprise yourself.
Toby was one. He always thought himself as straight and was actually prepared to more or less hit on the person he thought was a woman in front of him at their mailboxes. But it’s not a woman. It’s his neighbor, Kyle, although he doesn’t know he name just yet. But what makes it worse about the situation, is the look in Kyle’s eyes and on his face. All Toby sees is disgust. Or so he thinks. But what Toby thinks is disgust, is far from it. Looking at Toby is ticking every box that Kyle has and he’s terrified. He’s been in love with a straight man before and he refuses to allow himself to even think about how delicious Toby looks and how he wants to climb him like a tree. But little by little, they see each other and start to grow a tentative friendship. Especially when Toby needs an employee and Kyle needs a job. And before you know it, Toby is having to reassess everything he though about himself. Because he’s not seeing Kyle as a friend anymore. He wants more and wants it all. But will he be able to get past that he’s never been with a man and trust his heart or will things stay the same?
The one thing about this book right off the bat that I LOVED, was Toby’s sister. That woman is a trip and a half. She takes no crap off anyone and isn’t afraid to call Toby or anyone else on their crap. I love it. She’s got a wicked sense of humor and a love so deep and loyal for her brother that it makes my heart ache. And because of her, things in the book really started to change. To a point. I mean the beginnings were there, but sometimes we need that extra kick in the pants, ya know? But I love Kyle and Toby so much too. It was a tentative relationship right off the start. Both were so awkward with each other. Kyle wants to climb the man and Toby is dealing with the fact that he wouldn’t mind letting Kyle climb him. But even before it became all about that, it became about caring. It became about intimacy, friendship and love. Knowing they had each other’s backs when they may have felt no one else had. And because of it Toby made another friend in Kyle’s roommate. And for Toby, that was huge. He didn’t have a lot friends. A lot of people he could count on, other than family. It was usually people wanting something from him and he working his butt off. So for Toby, he gained so much with Kyle. And for Kyle, he got the man of his dreams.
It’s a really sweet story. It’s not full of a lot angst and this and that. It’s just a beautiful story of love, self-discovery, and true family.
