Arnie’s POV “I had fun,” I finally say. “I liked him. And Tobias was perfect.” Duff says quietly, “You sound surprised.” I think about it. “I was, am, surprised.” Tobias is nice, and funny, and listens to me when I ramble. I’m not going to admit anything more to Duff. I don’t need Duff crowing about how he’s been right all along and I do actually have feelings for Tobias. Are we… dating now? We haven’t even kissed. But I accidentally called him my boyfriend, and I took him to dinner with my mother as if we were really dating. And afterward, in the parking lot of the Blue, it had felt like the end of a real date to me, when I hadn’t meant it to. I want to kiss Tobias; Jesus, I want to climb him like a tree. Kissing Tobias would not make me want to gag. Kissing Tobias would be epic—and I’m pretty sure Tobias wants to kiss me too. Boyfriends are supposed to want to kiss each other. But we aren’t boyfriends (because: revenge), and I have no intention of allowing my heart to get involved, right? Except my heart seems to have other ideas. This is all about karma. Karma, karma, karma. If you say it enough times, it makes it true. Right? The sneaky little voice in my head is not sure. Arnie Sedgewick Ferguson, I admonish myself, what have you done? I squeeze my eyes shut and admit to myself what happened earlier, and I silently groan. I maybe went on a real date, that’s what I did. I’m attached already. I’m a complete fool. Flopping over again, I kick my thin blanket off my body. The faintest breeze is creeping in through the open window, and I lift up my T-shirt, flapping it to get the most of it. The breeze doesn’t help cool me down. Isn’t this exactly what I want? I need to stay focused on the goal: righting the wrong, balancing the karma. I can’t let myself get wrapped up in the fact that Tobias is a really nice guy and seems to like me right back. Which is weird in itself, because most guys think I’m too much work. “There’s nothing going on between me and Tobias.” Because there couldn’t be. “Whatever you wanna think,” replies Duff, his voice sleepy. I lie awake for a long time thinking I’m fooling myself about my feelings for Tobias.
