REVIEW:
This story picks up where the previous book left us hanging. Emilio is recovering from taking the bullet they all believe was meant for Allesandro. As the gang tries to figure out who made the attempt, things are stirring up with the Irish and from within Allesandro’s own family. All of it seems to center around Emilio. Seems there is a lot more to Emilio ending up with Allesandro than his brother simply giving him over to save his own neck.
Emilio seems to be more fully accepting of his role as one of Allesandro’s boys and now has his sights set on vengeance on his brother. Apparently Allesandro saw the dark side in Emilio early on and everything Emilio has gone through has only solidified and nourished those feelings. Allesandro creates opportunity and uses it as Emilio’s final test to graduate from toy to boy status. Once accomplished (which Emilio did with flying colors), Allesandro names Emilio’s position as his advisor. This causes some unease in the ranks of the others, some good, some bad, and of course, the bad is dealt with quickly, as Allesandro never hesitates to punish or recondition his boys to remind them he is king.
As with the previous book, Allesandro is a ruthless leader – he doesn’t love his boys – he loves his position and will do anything to maintain that role. There are some new twists in this segment that shake up that status. Luca is still Allesandro’s second, but, as I said, there is a definite shift happening and we are left to wonder who is going to side with who, who will be successful and who will be left in the end. There are various takeover attempts, twists and turns, and we are left with another cliffhanger that ends with a bit of an eye opener that leaves you eager to jump into the final segment. Thankfully, it looks like we won’t have to wait too long to get it.
Heed the warnings on this, as there is quite a bit of violence (although not as much as book 1). This is not a romance by any stretch of the imagination. It is definitely exciting and will keep you turning pages.
