“I really don’t think—” I started.
“Would you be my boyfriend?”
He spoke at the same time I did, but I went quiet first, staring at him. For a second, it was all I could do.
“What?”
“While I’m here, I mean.” David pushed off the table and stepped closer, but he kept the cart between us. I halfway thought about running over his foot and rushing out. Ask a guy on a date, sure, but this was a big jump. “You’re funny. Cute. My bad night, last night—I’m here for a wedding. Just didn’t realize it’s my ex’s wedding.”
“Wait, are you—are you here for Eric’s wedding?”
“You know him?” David asked. For a second, he looked almost crestfallen.
I shrugged. “No. Not really. I know of him. His company built this place, right? We’ve never met. You two dated?”
He laughed again, more a wry, self-conscious chuckle. “No. He’s marrying my ex. He invited me to the wedding and, I just . . . I didn’t pay enough attention. But, you know, it’s kind of pathetic to show up at an ex’s wedding alone, and I need a date. Well, for, like, a week? Just through the wedding stuff. They rented a boat to take us all out on Thursday. There’s the rehearsal dinner Friday, then the ceremony on Saturday. A couple other little things during the week, dinners and stuff, but those are the big ones. If you have to skip the other stuff, that’s no big deal. I could tell them you’re sick.”
I pressed my lips together. Saying no was hard. He was clearly pretty uncomfortable, and he wasn’t exactly pushing.
“I don’t know if that’s really appropriate. Me and a guest. And, I, um . . . I’d have to get the time off work.”
“I could pay you,” he offered without missing a beat. There was a light in his eyes, but I guessed you didn’t become the kind of man who rented a whole suite on vacation if you weren’t capable of closing deals. “More than you make here.”
I chewed the inside of my cheek. This was probably crappy to think about, but a couple thousand dollars would finally get me over the hump. I’d be able to pay that lawyer his retainer. “How much?”
