Leland
Is a nice little wedding with Blow-up Randy and Jackson My Love too much to ask for? Clearly, because someone’s trying to kill one of us… again. Generally, this would be my thing and I would jump right in singing my murder song, but they want Jackson dead and I will do anything (and I mean anything) to keep him alive—including and not limited to: ten Dobermans, bulletproof glass, and dragging Cassel in with the promise of more Jerebear. These people have no idea what they’ve done targeting the man I love because I’m coming after them. But when it feels like everything might be lost, I start to understand that I have a family now who will stand by my side and do everything they can to make sure we end this on our terms.
Jackson
When someone attacks me, it’s clear they want something from me. The issue is that I have no idea who they are or what they’re after. And if I don’t figure it out soon, I’m afraid Leland is going to smother me with his overprotectiveness (or put me in a bubble at the top of a tower). The issue is that time is ticking and with the price tag on my head, there’s no telling who is coming for me or when. Together, Leland and I have to decipher who is telling the truth in this game of life or death because I have plans to marry the man of my dreams and no one is going to stop me—especially with Leland by my side.
REVIEW:
Our crazy kids are back at it again. At this point they really just want to get married. And there’s someone out there that wants to kill Jackson but Leland will have none of that. They have to wade through a bevy of adventures to figure out how to keep Jackson alive. There’ll be reliance on some not too smart actions and resources galore, but they’ll get married – if it kills them.
Alice Winters never disappoints with her humorous books. She can take the most absurd characters and throw them in to situations that make for good fun and sometimes get results. I had just finished up the third vampire book and wondered if the tone of her more silly characters were going to be the same – they’re not. Winters is able to capture the kooky nuances of her main characters just right for that particular book and series. She is able to write them so well you don’t think how clever she is but how clever is the character. That is the sign of a good writer who makes you only aware of the people in the story and not the person writing the story.
Even with the silliness, there is great character development. Leland has settled down *cough* somewhat and Jackson isn’t quite as straitlaced as he was in the beginning. Gone is the lone wolf persona and now he’s moved in to more an ensemble, bringing in the outer characters to help. We get a great dose of Daddy Henry, and he plays the straight character against the craziness just right – because Jackson is starting to become a bit wild himself. As is the other books in the series, this one is written in alternating points of view, and it paints a picture of two people who love each other. There’s a lot of growth in Leland this time, but you can’t quite take away the gun obsession. Oh, and throw a kid and some dogs in the mix, just to stir up more mayhem.
There’s a nice mystery, adventure surrounding their wild escapades, which is sometimes more interesting than the stunts that Leland pulls off. In my review of the first book I said that if anyone said Leland and Jackson, you’d know who they were talking about – and that has never been more true with this successful series. Winters is back to the top of her game in her writing and it’ll be a joy to see what comes next.
