Two rivals. One law internship. A whole lot of objectionable activity.
It wasn’t always this way between us.
We were best friends growing up.
Competitive? Yeah.
Ruthless? Definitely.
Neither of us liked to lose.
But the intense chemistry?
That’s new.
The hatred in his eyes?
That’s new, too.
I should let it go.
There’s too much bad blood between our families. Between us.
But I can’t.
I don’t think he can, either.
Now we’re gunning for the same internship.
If he thinks I’ll back down, he’s dead wrong.
Once upon a time, I lost everything.
I won’t let it happen again.
Go ahead. Try me.
REVIEW:
A new adult/college romance in the Extracurricular Activities series from Ms. Neve Wilder. These extracurricular activities’ romances has all the ingredients of being steamy and too engrossing.
Chet is one of Eric’s best friends, the other one being Amanda. Mark was Nate’s roommate and one of his best buddies as well. The town where they all live in and go to school to is not that big but it boasts of several schools. Of course, most everyone knows or recognizes everyone else. But I think the depth of history that Chet and Mark have are not common knowledge. They go a long way back.
Mark was privy to how Chet felt when the scandal happened to his family because of the indictment of his father. They were very, very close when they were kids. They drifted away from each other as they grew older. When they were in high school, they barely interacted. But when the news about his father became known, Chet went to Mark for comfort. And then they drifted apart again. Until college.
When Eric and Nate decided to move in together, Chet and Mark were at the housewarming party separately. Then things got heated when Mark started provoking Chet regarding their friend Cam, who over a year ago had complicated problems with drugs. After which, Chet decided to tell Mark what truly happened the night their mutual friend OD’d.
I guess you could say that their friendship started out simple when they were kids, but as they grew older and things started happening between their families, it became increasingly complicated. Both their fathers started a company together but then Chet’s father decided to form his own company. And then the scandal happened where the federal government already got involved. Needless to say, what happened to his father/family followed Chet wherever he went. He became a pariah of sorts. They avoided each other intentionally after then. When they reconnected because of their close friends, Eric and Nate, the hostility is still there but an underlying tension is (not) surprisingly present also. And to make matters worse (or better, it depends on how you look at it), they both got accepted for internship at the same law firm and will be doing a project as partners. What follows after are circumstances/situations that more or less confirms how strongly they feel toward each other. How they acted and reacted to each situation shows how deep and how long they have been feeling it. But things are more complicated now, too many things have happened. And that is the crux of the matter.
For those who have read Want Me, Eric and Nate’s story, the same elements that made you love them are all here, but with so much more. The snarky banters, the taunts, the emotions and feels all over the place, realization of how deeply ingrained these feelings are, will make you love to hate/love both MCs. It will also make you feel deeply for them, understand where they’re coming from with all of these emotions. But I think the friendship that started this rollercoaster ride will always be the foundation of their friendship/relationship. And that is as solid as anything else. So even if things are escalating or de-escalating at times, when you really look closely at it, that underlying tension is because they have been harboring deeper feelings for each other for a long time now.
I love how Ms. Wilder writes her stories in this setting, you can feel the hotness, intelligence, the sexual tension (is killing me), friendship and love. These are extracurricular activities that I can totally get engrossed it!
