Dasan Toomre is a water mystic who is having a rough day. Then he meets his mate, Jalin Black, a shark shifter and things start to look up. But before they are barely introduced, a bomb rips through Stone Haven killing nine residents. Dasan’s father was one of those residents. Devastated, he throws himself into his work in order to lessen the pain.
Jalin couldn’t believe his good fortune in meeting his mate. When his Dasan loses his father, Jalin does his best to comfort his mate, but it seems as if Dasan would rather be alone. Too hurt to stick around, Jalin goes to the only place he finds solace, the ocean.
Once Dasan realizes he’s pushed Jalin away, he chases his mate to the Pacific Ocean. As he looks out at the vast body of water he can only hope he’ll be able to find his mate in order to beg for a second chance.
REVIEW:
This was a hard one for both of the main MCs. Both are dealing with grief and PTSD in their own ways, and have a hard time trusting or moving on. Even as they find each other as mates, it doesn’t mean it’s instant happiness. And shew, it was hard to watch them both suffer so much.
Dasan is used to working with his grumpy father. Some days it’s hard to work with him because he’s so gruff and lately he seems to be forgetting things, and then taking it out on Dasan. They have a love/hate relationship, it seems at times. But Dasan’s father is proud of Dasan. It’s just he doesn’t know how to communicate. When one of his workers starts complaining of memory loss over something, Dasan knows he needs to get Chase to the drs. What they learn is shocking. The Psy are finding another way to try to get at the Alliance, and more importantly, Alek. But before they can fix the problem, Dasan’s father and several others have been killed. The one bright spot is Dasan has met his mate, Jalin, in this mess, but because of his grief, things aren’t going as planned. And for Jalin, he doesn’t know if he’s going to have a mate or not. Things may be looking down before they even began to look up. And Dasan has to decide if he’s going to let the circumstances get in the way of something he’s wanted for himself, or let him go and grieve over everything.
Grief is a funny thing. Not literally. People need to grieve in their own way. They close down, cry forever, who knows. The only thing for sure is everyone needs to grieve in their own way and in their own time. For Dasan, he closes off. For Jalin, he closes off as well, to a point. It’s not that Jalin means too, but Dasan has happier memories in his life than Jalin does. Heck, Jalin even knew Dasan’s father. They do talk at some point, and Dasan understands and even grieves for Jalin’s life. But that’s thing, because of both of the things they are dealing with, it’s hard for them to concentrate on their mating. At least for Dasan. It’s harder it seems sometimes for the ones closer to us to deal with those who are grieving. We get the brunt of whatever is going on in their heads, have to deal with the ups and downs of it. But for Jalin, he didn’t know how to deal because of his own issues.
Yes, it turns out as an HEA, or in some cases an HFN, but it takes some work to get to where they need to be. It’s not an easy thing. Life is never easy, period, but when you mix in some very heavy baggage, it’s worse. And you have to learn how to get through it, or it will break you and the things you love the most.
