No matter when, no matter where, buying condoms was awkward. Everybody involved knew exactly what was going down—likely me—and the cashier’s grin couldn’t match the brightness of Cord’s.
As for me, well, my neck was hot, and I wanted to get upstairs and out of my collared shirt—out of everything if the night went the way I hoped.
“Have a great night!” she called after us. The sound of her giggle followed us into the night.
“You’re cute,” he mumbled once we were outside the shop.
I bit my lip and smiled. “I can work with cute.”
Nothing new there. I’d always been small. Guys like Cord and Thom—bigger, fitter, confident guys—liked all the ways I was delicate. They could toss me around or make me blush easily. But I couldn’t expect too much. Cute had limits, and I got all twisted up and stubborn and then I wasn’t so cute anymore.
On the elevator, he turned and looked directly at me. “Nervous?”
I didn’t realize I was tapping my fingers against my thighs until he reached out and took my hand. Staring down at it, I slowly curled my fingers over his. He leaned down and brushed his soft lips over my knuckles.
“I . . . guess?”
He hummed—a low, melodic sound that tingled right down my spine. Then, he was moving toward me, his large body blocking the door. My shoulders hit the wall, the railing around the elevator’s sides dug into the small of my back, forcing my hips forward. When he pressed in, that was where he connected first. His hips pressed into mine, his bulge a firm heat against my lower belly. I had to bite back a moan.
“What are you nervous about?”
My mouth fell open, but the words didn’t come right away. He was reaching for my throat, his fingers skimming lightly over my skin to tip my chin up. He arched his brow at me, and it all tumbled out.
“I—It’s been a while since I—you know. I was caught up in work. And you’re really hot, and what if I’m not any good? I wasn’t good enough to keep Thom’s attention—”
“I’m not Thom.” He could’ve been annoyed at the comparison. I would’ve been, but he said it matter-of-factly, his eyes skimming my face, lingering to stare at my lips. I licked them again.
“Sure. Just—”
“You know,” he said, his thumb dragging along the ridge of my Adam’s apple, “even if your sex with Thom was less than stellar, there were two people responsible for that.”
He leaned down then, his mouth a hot, wet pressure against mine. He kissed me like he was drinking honey, his lips coaxing me open expertly, his tongue sliding against mine until I was quaking against him, holding onto his shoulders to try and find balance.
“You and I won’t have that problem,” he swore, his lips barely a breath from mine.
