Nothing brings two men—or one man and an ancient god—together like revenge.
Private investigator Sloane sacrificed his career in law enforcement in pursuit of his parents’ murderer. Like them, he is a follower of long-forgotten gods, practicing their magic and offering them his prayers… not that he’s ever gotten a response.
Until now.
Azaethoth the Lesser might be the patron of thieves and tricksters, but he takes care of his followers. He’s come to earth to avenge the killing of one of his favorites, and maybe charm the pants off the cute detective Fate has placed in his path. If he has his way, they’ll do much more than bring a killer to justice. In fact, he’s sure he’s found the man he’ll spend his immortal life with.
Sloane’s resolve is crumbling under Azaethoth’s surprising sweetness, and the tentacles he sometimes glimpses escaping the god’s mortal form set his imagination alight. But their investigation gets stranger and deadlier with every turn. To survive, they’ll need a little faith… and a lot of mystical firepower.
REVIEW:
When I first started reading this, I was so sad for Sloane. With the horror he’s had to deal with in his life, I understand why he’s done the things he’s done. But then he met a sweet man at a party his friend was throwing, and was actually looking forward to life once again. Only something changes again.
The lovely young man he met the night before, Lochlain, is now dead. And occupying his body is none other than Azaethoth the Lesser, determined to find vengeance for his follower. But Sloane doesn’t want a god to be around him, especially when he feels like all the gods ignored him when he needed them the most. But there’s a lot about himself he doesn’t even know. And Azaethoth is about to educate him on many things. If only he could keep his tentacles to himself. Sloane is determined to find out what happened to his new friend, even if he has to deal with the god. And what he finds leads him on a path back to his parents. Now if they can solve the mystery in time, before someone is determined to destroy the world, and Azaethoth can convince Sloane that he is the one for him.
I don’t know if I’ve laughed as hard as I have reading a book in a while, while reading this one. Azaethoth gets his name for a reason. He is a pistol. But what I love about him too, is even as much of a trickster he can be, he also knows when it really is time to be serious. And he wants Sloane to see that he’s truly serious about the vengeance on Loch, his parents, and on how much he wants Sloane for his mate. And the more you find out about him, even as a god, he’s truly a vulnerable being. He’s just a booger. The thing is, in truth, he’s everything Sloane needs. He brings life to Sloane, and helps him find his purpose. Even when all is said and done with what they need to do. Sloane realizes what he needs in life. And it is Az. But it doesn’t mean things are easy. Sloane has a lot of baggage and in digging for who the murderers could be, it ends up all connecting and it’s tearing Sloane apart. And Az shows Sloane that it’s ok. And shows him a life beyond his imagination.
It’s a great mystery and such a fun book. You guys will really be missing out if you don’t read this story. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
