Thanks for having us here at Love Bytes! Today we’re talking about Kanaan & Tilney: The Case of the Undead Wood, the 3rd and latest in the Kanaan & Tilney Investigations series. These are paranormal mysteries set in Boston that revolve around a couple (in every sense) of private investigators. One, Lowell Kanaan, is a wolf-shifter. The other, John Tilney, controls the power of fire. The world of praeternaturals–that is to say people with magical abilities–is just beneath the surface of the mundane human world, and that’s exactly how they like it.
 
Praeternatural folk divide themselves into five “factions”: Beast (like Kanaan), Elementalist (like Tilney), Psychogenic, Terran, and Necromorph. Each of the Kanaan & Tilney Investigations focuses on a different faction. For an in-depth look at the factions we’ve already explored, how about some fabulous mood boards?
 
Kanaan & Tilney 1: The Case of the Arms Dealers dealt with Necromorph culture. Necromorphs work with the energy trade-offs of–you guessed it–death and decomposition!
 
 
Kanaan & Tilney 2: The Case of the Man Eater focused on Beasts–which brought the story into contact with Lowell’s family. Beasts are animal shifters of all kinds, often organized into packs. Unless they’re like Lowell, whose family has been exiled… ahem.
 
 
And now, our new kid on the block, Kanaan & Tilney 3: The Case of the Undead Wood, gets into Terran life (and politics, yikes). Terrans work with plants and the energies they use and manipulate–they love growing things and, apparently, being a pain in Lowell’s ass.

Praeternaturals—people with paranormal powers—all over Boston know Lowell Kanaan and John Tilney for their discretion and forthrightness as private detectives. They’re also about to move in together, and John seems to be dragging his feet for reasons Lowell can’t fathom. Personal worries are quickly put aside, however, when they get a top-priority case: someone has introduced a blight into the Terran Garden, a kind of living graveyard for dormant Terrans who’ve become one with trees.

Most blights don’t cause trees to start craving human flesh, but somehow, this one has, and one Gardener is already dead. If Lowell and John can’t navigate the back-channels of Terran politics and secrecy quickly enough, more dead will certainly follow. Accusations abound: a Necromorph revenge plot, a widower’s anger, a friend’s jealousy, political maneuvering, or simply an ugly accident. The only thing that’s clear is the carnage will get worse until Lowell and John discover who introduced this new blight and why they’d desecrate sacred Terran ground.

Just when Lowell was starting to think he’d seen it all… foliage zombies.
