BLURB:
Poppy has had a crush on her friend and neighbour for ages. Who wouldn’t? But afraid to make her feelings known, Poppy would rather keep her dreams to herself than sacrifice the friendship.
Vivacious Jamie can get any girl she wants. She is gorgeous, sexy, outgoing, and confident, but she has one major disadvantage — a severe illness. Often ridden by pain, Jamie fears she’ll be a burden in any relationship.
When Poppy unexpectantly walks in on Jamie, checking up on her, she is overwhelmed by what she finds. Will the two women confess their mutual attraction? In which direction will the sparks fly?
REVIEW:
Sometimes, just a little snippet of an adorable meet-cute is all you need to make you smile. Poppy and Jamie are fun characters who have instant chemistry and an instant, undeniable spark that heats up these few short pages.
This short story is about Poppy and her giant crush on her neighbor Jamie. She’s not sure if Jamie feels the same way until she walks in on Jamie in a private moment and the two break through their sexual tension. Hamlin is great at writing enthusiastic consent, which I love, and there is always a ton of communication when their characters finally get together. I also adore Jamie, who plays against common stereotypes of a “helpless” character with disabilities—she knows exactly what she needs and wants and is not afraid to ask her partner for it. I just wish we got a longer story about her, because she rocks!
While L.J. Hamlin’s stories have been hit-or-miss for me, I find their best works are grounded in reality rather than the fantastic. This story is very down to earth and the characters feel real, like girls you’d want to hang out with. I’d definitely recommend this one as well as many of the other short stories in the JMS Books “Hot Flash” series.
