Power corrupts… Sometimes it can be petrifying.
In the upcoming council elections of the rural town where he lives, Jason is working as assistant to his cousin Neil, a man who’s as narcissistic as he is ambitious.
Almost running into Morena, the fortune teller from the visiting fair, Neil is able to turn the situation to his advantage and look good in the small community by offering free seats to the fair’s big top.
Paranormal detective Garen begins an investigation into a death where the victim is turned to stone and finds an unlikely ally in the victim’s housekeeper, Chloris Webling, a woman with powers of her own. However, when they are attacked by something that kills with fang and claw, Garen needs the help of his husband Luke.
Against his cousin’s wishes, Jason begins a relationship with Anaru, the nephew of one of Neil’s competitors. Jason’s concerned that not only might Neil discover his deception and sack him, but also about the infected bite on Neil’s forehead, which seems to be getting worse and making Neil more prone to furious outbursts than normal.
Luke comes to believe that the strange growth on Neil’s forehead is a manifestation of the evil eye of the demon Balor and that the fortune teller is using Neil as a vessel for the demon.
When the battle begins, it pits Garen and his forces against Madam Morena and her deadly familiar, while Luke and Chloris track down Neil to prevent the demon from using him as a gateway into the human world.
Reader advisory: This book contains scenes of violence and murder.
REVIEW:
I am really loving this series. Good vs. evil. Mysteries into what the evil is and what they have to fight. I love that they never know what they are coming up against but they are determined to fight no matter what it is. In this one, it’s basically 3 for the price of 1 and just stopping the worst one is going to be hard enough as it is. But stopping the one who started this summoning is more powerful than they bargained for.
Jason has had enough of being Neil’s lackey. His beck and call man. And if it was for the fact that he needed to save his family’s farm, he’d basically tell Neil where to stick it. But he has to bite his tongue and grumble. But Neil goes too far one day and someone finds in Neil the perfect patsy for what they want. When Neil literally runs into Morena, the fair’s psychic/tarot reader, he insults her. Jason tells him to tone it down, but as a revenge, Morena decides to hype up to Neil’s ego and tells him he’s going to go far in his life. But what he doesn’t realize is he’s about to be used in a way he never thought of. As murders around the neighborhood started getting worse, Neil’s getting grumpier. Especially when Jason tries to take time off and for himself. Neil’s greed for power and everything is pushing Jason too far, but he tries to hang on for a few more weeks. It’s not til he and his new lover are attacked that Jason knows something more dangerous is going on and somehow Neil is involved. And it’s up to Garen and Luke, with a few white witches, to figure out who is from where and what’s being summoned and stop it all before more murders or attacks are committed.
You know, I know this is fiction, but in a way it’s also very true. When greed for power and/or money start to come out, like certain people we know, they can become very evil. Maybe not demonic evil, maybe so. Who really knows. But I know that most will do about anything possible to make that happen. Including murder, rape, drugs, gun running, slavery. You name it. And in this case, Neil’s greed for power made him a perfect target for an evil entity. He was suckered into something he didn’t even see coming, because his ego was so big, all they had to do was play into it to get what they wanted from him. And Jason, I felt for him so bad. It’s often those that have to work for these people that are abused and hurt and overworked. No telling what else. They are the ones who have to suffer the tempers, the insults and so much more. They are made to cover things up or do all the grunt work while the ones in power receive the glory and they get stomped on. And Jason was often. And anyone in Neil’s vicinity. But thankfully, Jason found a way to get away from it. Even if only for a bit at a time. And for his sanity, it was a good thing. For his safety as well.
And again, I love seeing Garen and Luke work. They work so well together. And they made new friends in this one that helped make things better. Even in the midst of the storm, they knew someone else had their backs and it was so awesome to read. I really enjoy seeing what Garen and Luke do and can’t wait to see if they have another adventure and when it’s going to happen. It’s a really good series.
