A werewolf with a death wish bargains with a hunter for salvation.
Justin has spent several lifetimes atoning for the violent nature of his curse. A mindless angry beast several nights a month, he carries a burden of blood for past sins. Tired and lonely, he’s seeking an end to his torment.
Vincent bears the curse, though only by half. A hybrid, he hunts those of his brethren who let their monsters take over. And he’s hell bent on destroying them all, until he’s forced to deal with one who’s begging for peace. Except deliverance wears many guises.
Their desire for redemption erupts in a fiery passion drawing them closer together.
Finally, he reached the restaurant he worked at and turned into the alley behind it. Unfortunately, the back door had been locked for the first time in forever during business hours. Now he’d trapped himself with nowhere to go. He swung around to face her. She stood at the end of the alley, her crossbow trained on him. “What? Vincent too afraid to take me on himself? Or is it too distasteful to betray me after our deal?”
The blond sneered and said, “Vincent’s getting soft. Letting a monster run around the city without putting it down. I knew what you were. Vincent was supposed to take care of you. Then I find out he’s actually working with you.”
Justin’s eyes widened in surprise. Vincent hadn’t sent the girl. He saw her finger tighten on the trigger and braced himself for the blow. “I saw you last night,” she said, disgust evident in her tone.
“Saw me?” he asked.
“Through the window, lying in bed with him. You’ve poisoned him. Bewitched him with some kind of magic. A month ago, he would have killed you as soon as look at you. Now I see him, sleeping with a monster. It’s repulsive.” Anger radiated from her. “I’m going to kill you to help him break free of your curse.”
Just as the arrow released, a dark form hurled itself at her and knocked her to the ground. The arrow came straight at Justin, and he attempted to dodge it, but the silver already streaming through his veins caused his movements to be impeded. He hissed when it nicked his already wounded shoulder.
“What the hell are you doing, Yasmine?” Vincent demanded, picking her up off the ground.
Justin stood there watching them argue while gripping his shoulder, hoping to stem the flow of blood.
“You’ve lost your mind, Vincent! How can you possibly be working with a werewolf?” Yasmine demanded.
“Because he wants those monsters dead just as much as I do, if not more!” Vincent shouted in her face.
“He’s poisoned your mind! You can’t possibly believe he wants to kill his own kind, do you?”
“I’ve seen him do it, Yasmine. You have no right to interfere here. I didn’t ask for your help,” he growled at her.
Justin staggered and slumped into the side of the building. The silver weakened him further the longer it remained in his body. Vincent hurried to his side, sliding an arm around Justin’s waist and lifting his good arm around his shoulders.
“Those were silver tipped arrows, and they were dipped in silver nitrate. He’s going to have a very painful night, if he survives. I could put him down. Speaking humanely, of course.”
Vincent glared at Yasmine, supporting Justin’s entire weight. “Go home. If you try to kill him again, I’ll be there to put you down first!”
Yasmine reared back in shock. “You’d kill a hunter? You really have been poisoned. Wait until the others hear about this. They’ll hunt you down, too.”
“They know about him. I’ve already contacted the others. Now go home!”
Yasmine stared for a charged minute and then turned and disappeared without another word. Vincent pulled Justin tighter to him and started walking. “I’m always saving your ass, wolf.”
Justin laughed weakly. “I guess so.”
“It’s amazing you’ve survived as long as you have. You must have been flying on sheer dumb luck. We need to get that arrow out and get sodium chloride into your bloodstream. It’s the only way to combat the nitrate,” Vincent explained.
Groaning, Justin knew Yasmine’s words were no lie. He was in for a very painful night.
