Blog Tour, Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway:
Standard Candle by G.B. Lindsey
Denny Wyatt: friend.
Denny, who sleeps in threadbare tees that smell like his cigarettes, who coats his arms in the guts of engines, who kisses like he’s sampling you, scenting you, until you forget that there are things you can’t afford to forget.
Denny Wyatt: with benefits.
It’s not dating. You’ve both done enough of that. You’re both stuck in this town, you’re both going nowhere, but at night, you have each other. It’s sex. It’s an arrangement. It suits you both.
Denny Wyatt: yours.
Tonight, the lie shatters. Denny Wyatt is so much more than friend, than lover, than any one word.
But you’d better speak—better find the words—or he’s gone.

Tonight, Denny smells like leather. He owns one jacket—his father’s—dirty brown and skinned at the elbows. On work mornings, he stumbles out of his bed and into a frayed cotton tee covered with oil stains. In jeans, always. Tonight, a pine-green shirt peers out from under his collar. It turns his eyes into beacons.
You met through older siblings, which is hilarious, seeing as your sister disowned you and Denny hasn’t spoken to his brother since Stewart married a fundamentalist woman and converted. Fundamentalist something. What kind of fundamentalism was it, anyway? You wonder if Stewart holds a sign now and protests in infuriating ways.
But before all that, your sister and his brother went to college together, and they held a kegger—your first, age sixteen, and there was this obscenely drunk, obscenely chatty high school senior with one hand on your nape as you threw up your guts in the backyard, who told you—
“Don’t drink the punch at these things.” Denny slaps your side and rubs it once, already looking away.
“I know.”
