BLURB:
Out of the Cage: After falling off a cliff and becoming seriously injured, a man’s world is turned upside down.
Elroy Greer has been having a really bad month. A co-worker blames him for mistakes he didn’t make. His car is broken into. He lost most of his friends to his ex in the break-up. Then his hiking buddy bails at the last second, leaving Elroy alone at a trailhead. He decides some time in nature to get away from it all is still an excellent idea and heads out on his own. True to his bad luck, Elroy gets caught in a spring flash storm, loses his way, and tumbles off a cliff. He expects to die out there, but he doesn’t. Elroy wakes up in a log cabin with a man who’s already supposed to be dead—Rueben Calhoun. Except, Rueben is calling himself Dermot Reever. As Dermot begins explaining about wolf shifters and mates and that they are destined to be together, Elroy can hardly believe it’s real. He’s sure he’ll wake up and find it’s all been a pain-medicine-induced dream. If it’s not a dream, can Elroy really take the chance that his bad luck won’t ruin everything and have enough faith to begin a relationship with a wolf shifter in hiding?
REVIEW:
Note: While this is number 52 in this series it can be read as a stand alone although of course.
Elroy has not been having a great time of it. A break-up has left him socially isolated – with the exception of his two besties – Camilla and Bart. Those two also are enamored of each other and Elroy is in the middle of that too. Plus his job has not been going well and he really needs a break. So he heads out on a hiking trip to clear his head and get some time with his friend. But he ends up going out on his own and runs into trouble. Just when he thinks things can’t get worse, he steps off a cliff into more danger and injury.
When he wakes up in a cabin, he recognizes the man taking care of him as Rueben Calhoun – a lawyer who had died the year before. Except he’s not dead but is now a ranger called Dermot Reever. Elroy is really confused and he’s sure whatever pain meds Rueben aka Dermot has been giving him has messed with his mind. So he’s struggling with the whole thing and then Dermot explains about shifters and mates and other paranormal things 😛 Elroy is skeptical at first, but he has had an unusual attraction to Dermot when he was Rueben and now he knows why!
Of course things can’t go too smoothly and it seems someone is after Elroy or something that Elroy may have. The rest of the pack help out though in trying to determine what kind of danger Elroy is in and what is going on. Thankfully the cavalry comes to the rescue and Elroy and Dermot are able to start their new life together 😀
While this one followed some of the normal formula of this series, there were some nice twists in this one. Any my favorite characters appear 😉 so that’s an automatic uptick of half a star! If you know my love of this series, you’ll know who that is, but I’ll not spoil it here. Once again, I can’t get enough of these series from Charlie Richards. They guarantee a happy ending for the fated mates and sometimes that’s easier than others, but it’s always fun to see what combinations and pairings she comes up with next. I appreciate that the stories follow a pattern but have enough new elements and surprises to keep me coming back for more 😀
