SoCalGov Stalker Kai Gracen always knew Death walked in his shadow. Enough people told him that, including his human mentor, Dempsey. Problem was, the old man never told him what to do when Death eventually caught up.
Where Tanic, his elfin father and the Wild Hunt Master of the Unsidhe Court, brought Kai pain and suffering, Dempsey gave him focus and a will to live… at least until everything unraveled. Now caught in a web of old lies and half-truths, Kai is torn between the human and elfin worlds, unsure of who he is anymore. Left with a hollowness he can’t fill, Kai aches to find solace in the one elfin he trusts—a Sidhe Lord named Ryder—but he has unfinished business with Dempsey’s estranged brother, a man who long ago swore off anything to do with the feral elfin child Dempsey dragged up from the gutter.
Reeling from past betrayals, Kai searches for Dempsey’s brother, hoping to do right by the man who saved him while trying to keep ahead of the death haunting his every step. Kai never thought he’d find love or happiness as a Stalker, but when Death comes knocking at his door, Kai discovers a fierce need to live life to the fullest—even if that means turning his back on the people he calls family.
REVIEW:
It’s Release Day and I have to admit it! I haven’t been this excited for a new story in a long time!
Kai Gracen has had more than his fair share of trauma but he’s always fought back. With a wit sharper than all his knives, and a penchant for winning impossible fights, Kai tends to come out on top most of the time.
But some things can’t be beaten, and the insidious disease that has been stalking Dempsey has finally caught up with him. But not before Dempsey drops a few bombs into Kai’s life.
I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love the world that Rhys Ford has created for this amazing character. It’s filled with bright colors and vibrant characters. I can almost see the merged worlds she describes like a painting in my head. I imagine a Blade Runner kind of world with less tech and rain and more magic. The imagery is rich and beautiful and it makes me long to visit Kai’s world…but I don’t want to be eaten by a dragon thanks.
Kai is trying so hard to keep his heart to himself but he scatters pieces of it wherever he goes without even realizing it. He manages to be memorable to everyone he meets, in good ways and bad. People might not always like him, but they always respect him.
I cried a lot reading this story. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for Kai to deal with his surrogate father’s death, especially after the news he left on his own to deal with. The author does an amazing job of taking us on Kai’s journey through his grief.
Kai’s relationship with Ryder is very interesting. I’m enjoying the very slow burn and how the romantic relationship doesn’t overshadow the other aspects of the story. It’s truly about Kai and how he deals with the struggles he faces, but physically and mentally. He’s ever child who was ever tormented by a horrific parent who probably seems as much a monster as the man who created Kai.
If fantasy is your forte, then you will love this book. It’s definitely a world to get lost in with characters that take you along for a hell of a ride.
