Gravity is just another force to overcome.
Renowned aerial artist Avery Dylan has a secret. He’s not who he seems to be. A mercenary by trade, he’s been activated by his handlers in a desperate move to bring down an impossible-to-reach target inside the infamous Asylum Fight Club.
When his high wire act proves easier to execute than one elusive submissive, Avery must resort to more than slithering silks and suggestive moves to breach the club’s defenses. Infiltrating its security requires sneaking past its most carefully guarded boundary—Rhodey Leonov’s heart.
But this is one drop that could kill.
When emotions distract from a mission, it never ends well. For the other guy. There are more headstones in Rhodey Leonov’s past than notches on his belt, which is a track record he lives with. Literally. Being unstoppable keeps his family safe. They may hate his methods, but so long as they’re in one piece, he can live with that.
Until an attack on The Asylum’s newest member reveals a weakness Rhodey can’t let stand. Having Avery recover in his bed for a few days could be a lethal mistake, though Rhodey’s not quite ready to reach for the shovel… Unless it’s to dig himself into the dark pit he’s escaped for so long. With a sub whose sweetness might be nothing but venom.
For both men, love isn’t an option, because falling only leads to one place…
A shallow grave.
REVIEW:
When I started reading this story, I was a little torn at first. Most of you know, if you keep up with my reviews, that I didn’t like Rhodey at all. I didn’t like how he trained Noah and kept up the manipulations. But Rhodey started growing on me in the last book, with Dallas and with Kieran, and so my opinion started to change with him. But then I got the shock of my life at finding out who the other assassin was, and at what lengths Lawson was put through to get out.
Again, there may be some trigger points for some. If you haven’t heard by now, these books are not for the faint of heart. It’s a fight club for a reason. And there are a lot of other things that go with it. Pasts that involve torture, attempted murder, murder, rape and so forth. So have a care.
Rhodey has done good with making sure security measures are in place for the club and those in it. Or so he thought. When Kovit came back from the grave and tried to kill Wren and those surrounding him again, and when Lawson came home mysteriously and with bruises for days, Rhodey knew something was up. And he failed somewhere. What he didn’t expect was the person he was somehow falling for, which was a shock in itself, was the one who was the other assassin. Avery’s been doing all he can to get at Wren, but it’s almost impossible at the Asylum. He’s under lock and heavily guarded key because of the attempts on his life. And so Avery’s had to play it cool. But someone is noticing things about him and getting too close to the truth. When Avery sets himself up to be injured to keep quiet about things, he doesn’t expect Rhodey to be the one to rescue him and also be the one he has to fight not to tell things too. Because he really does want to tell. He doesn’t really want to hurt Wren, but he has no choice. Rhodey gets it out of him, and they all work on a plan to finally free Wren, but like all plans, they come with a price. And these have become very costly. To almost losing himself and Lawson, and several more people because these evil people have no qualms about what to do to keep their assassins in line. So now they have to decide what’s it going to take to finally free everyone for a while.
This one was intense. Of course, anything with Rhodey usually is, but it’s more than that. With Kovit popping back up, Lawson coming home and finding out how he did it, to finding out what Avery’s role really is, it’s taking its toll on everyone. And while at some points, it seems like a breaking point, the crew is starting to learn how to rely on each other and admit when they’re wrong and need help. So, it’s been a blessing and a curse. A curse, because you obviously don’t want the crew to die, but a blessing because the foundations and relationships that have finally formed and the right way, have finally started to settle deep. They’re learning, growing and evolving into the families they’ve always meant to be. They’ve still got a long way to go. It sometimes takes a lot with a family like these guys. Especially with all they’ve all been through. But, the key thing is, they keep trying. They keep getting back up, they keep fighting, they keep talking and they keep pushing forward. And even Rhodey is learning what it means to finally have friends and family. And for him, that’s huge. He’s even found someone that matches him to a tee and can finally sleep in peace and know that his partner, Avery, has got his back. And not his throat.
It’s been a long journey to get where these guys are now. They’ve all still got a lot to go, but it’s a work in progress. They are finding their dreams and living them. Finding the friends and family they’ve craved for so long, and are finally pulling it together. It’s been a great journey so far. Full of surprises and some not so good, and some great. Wonder what’s next on the horizon.
