Rowan’s life had gone down the toilet ever since his teenage crush had moved away when he was fourteen. Shifting as omega, then his parent’s dying, Rowan knew the only luck he ever had was bad luck. If it wasn’t for his grandmother, he’d have left his pack lands a long time ago. Visiting his Grandmother one night, taking her the baking supplies she used to feed the children of the pack, he was confronted by his worst nightmare – Percy. But to his surprise, the evening didn’t turn out the way Percy and his friends had planned.
Shadow, formerly known as Gray, always knew he’d return to his home pack one day. He just didn’t expect it to take so long. When he comes across his brother Percy, threatening the one he’d always known was his mate, Percy’s night went from bad to worse. Killing Percy was easy for Shadow; wooing his mate was a whole different story.
Between the drugs, the elders, and the fearful pack members, finding time to make Rowan happy was an almost impossible task. But Shadow hadn’t come home alone. If he can find the one man behind all the mess, then he and Rowan’s life would be the HEA he’d dreamed of. That’s provided Rowan doesn’t get killed first.
REVIEW:
Firstly, I should admit to being a big fan of Lisa Oliver’s books. When I need a bit of escapism her paranormal and fantasy stories are a favourite go-to if I want to destress. So, it pains me to say that I’m not really a fan of this particular book. It’s probably one of my least favourites from this author, and it kills me to say that.
The plot itself was quite interesting, when it comes to the storyline, this is typical Lisa Oliver – a lot of mushy romance mixed in with a healthy dose of violence. Just the way I like it. Plus, shifters, so bonus, right!? And then there’s the fact that the author includes a cute play on the Little Red Riding Hood fairytale…and all of these things are just great big ticks from me. I even appreciated the fact that the first time the main characters have sex Shadow is too excited to make it a mind-blowing experience for his virgin mate, and Rowan is pretty underwhelmed by the whole thing.
So, you know, I loved all this stuff and I tried really hard to overlook my one objection to this book, but it was such a major part of the story that I just couldn’t. Shadow is an absolute dick. I can’t remember the last time I disliked a main character this much. He is such an overbearing alpha asshole that I wanted to throat punch the guy and I really really couldn’t get past my dislike of him to enjoy the rest of the story.
Which is why I found this book so hard to review. The story is absolutely fine, and I feel like many readers won’t have the same issue as I did. I guess some readers dig alpha assholes who are the ultimate in manly men. If you do like those kind of characters then maybe this book will be exactly what you’re looking for to take care of that itch that only a good shifter book can scratch.

I want to like the alpha. Let’s hope I can!
Thank you so much for taking the time to review Rowan’s story – Shadow is a dick, pure and simple but as this will now be developed into a series, he has plenty of room to grow and improve 🙂 I love your honesty, and thank you for enjoying so many of my other stories 🙂 Huge hugs xx
