REVIEW:
Logan likes his job as a bartender at a bar and grill. His boss is very understanding and works with him so that the can take care of his family – namely his two-year-old nephew Jakey that he is raising after the death of his cousin/brother J.J. and his wife Haley. Of course this was a huge blow not just to Jakey, bu to Logan and his parents as well since J.J. was raised basically as Logan’s brother. The adults in the situation are doing everything they can to support Logan and Jakey, but sometimes it’s a bit much.
Creed spied Logan one day when meeting his brother and his two partners at the bar and grill where Logan works. He’s intrigued by what he overhears. He’s not exactly out and when his brother and one of his partners tease him about his serial dating of women, Logan doesn’t think anything about him. But Creed insists on taking him for coffee and getting to be friends with him. He sees Logan is skittish and shy. He pushes every one of Creed’s buttons with this big body and gorgeous tattoos and his kind eyes. But Creed is also smart enough to not push because he knows Logan has a lot on his plate.
Logan can’t figure out for the life of him what Creed wants or why he’s singled him out. He’s also kind of amazed that he’s interested in Jakey and doesn’t try to overstep after Logan shares his story of why he’s raising Jakey. Creed wants to take care of Logan and that means Jakey too, so he’s all in. He’s not had a lot of experience with kids before, but he figures he can learn. When Logan decides to let him into their lives, there is some trepidation on both sides, but Creed is flexible and meets Logan more than halfway. Logan begins to see that maybe he can have a life and something for himself beyond just being Jakey’s caretaker.
*sigh* I wanted to like this more than I actually did. The premise sounded so good, but I just didn’t feel the connection between the MCs for some reason. The story is told from alternating POVs of the MCs, so we get a sense of both characters motivations and backstory. I really felt so bad for Logan – he really suffered with the loss of his best friends and taking on raising a two-year old. I really didn’t care for Logan’s mother, although she somewhat redeemed herself towards the end. I LOVED Logan’s boss and his coworker Bobby. I did like how the cute kid, Jakey, was written. Trauma and loss and grief for kids is so differently processed than for adults and I think this was accurately portrayed. I did also like how Creed was there for Logan – wanting to comfort him and not push him into anything. He was extremely considerate of Logan – I just didn’t feel the chemistry really. There isn’t anything bad about the writing or the story, I just kind of think the story might have benefited from a higher word count. Honestly I was more intrigued by Creed’s brother and his partners than I was by Creed and Logan and now I REALLY want to read their story! If you’re looking for a short and sweet low-angst read, give this one a go.
