Breaking a few rules didn’t seem like a huge deal.
With his name on several government assasination lists, Wren Gibson’s prison sentence might’ve been the shortest in hacker history, until an unlikely rescue lands him behind the sturdy brick walls of The Asylum Fight Club. Where everyone can game the rules, yet he’s forbidden from even placing his piece on the board.
But one Dom tempts him to gamble everything.
The Asylum’s resident, on-call medic, Jared “Doc” McCleod is familiar with the histories of every man who crosses the club’s threshold. Their pain, their fear… Of them all, only Wren has held on to his secrets, a fascinating contrast with how completely he gives up control. As the general on the front lines of The Asylum’s internal and external battles, it’s Jared’s duty to make certain the quiet sub with soulful brown eyes doesn’t fly under his radar for long.
Showing his hand could cost them both.
When Jared takes on the task of helping Wren recover from an unexpected injury, Wren begins to wonder. While the Dom is tending to everyone else, who is there for him? To show Jared he can be the sub he needs, he would willingly light himself on fire. For an ex-con with a target on his back, risking that kind of notice is a dangerous strategy, but…
Sometimes, getting what you want requires going all in.
REVIEW:
I have wanted this story for a while, for several reasons. One, I wanted Wren to finally have someone of his own and I really thought Doc would be good for him. Despite his reputation. Two, I wanted to see Doc’s story and find out what makes him tick the way he does. And to see if his reputation was warranted or merely gossip to make subs look better. And after the way one sub acted that caused hurt to Wren, yeah, I think a lot was just to make themselves look better.
I knew a lot of Wren’s story already and if you’ve read these you will too, because his story intertwines with Noah’s. You may not get every detail, but enough that you get the gist of it. But in this story you get it all and find out why Noah has such a tight rein over Wren. And then I felt even more for the boy, because he was betrayed many times. So I understood why Noah’s collar or protection means so much to him. But Wren is starting to desire more, needing more. And he’s starting to set his eyes on one Dom with a bad rep. But what no one seems to get, is Wren is not afraid of Doc. There’s something about Doc that calms him and he sees more than Doc would probably like him too as well. But Doc has some issues of his own. His professional life and the life of the Asylum have crossed dangerous paths now and Doc may lose his profession. On top of it, things at the Asylum are building up again, this time with the subs and it’s not looking pretty. And no one is aware of the danger lurking at any corner. And it’s going to take a lot from everybody to pull things back from the brink they’ve gotten to again, and for it to settle down. And maybe it’s time for it to start back at the beginning with Doc and Noah.
There is so much intertwining in this story. Shew. The pasts of all of them are so messed up, I’m surprised they are walking around with any at all. And because of it all, things are definitely tense. And I can understand that too. Sometimes things are meant one way and taken another when the tension is so thick. And it just builds and builds until it can’t stand the pressure anymore. And it’s been a long time coming from all of them. We saw some in the last book and we are seeing more in this one. And it’s going to take a heck of a lot to get things where they started from. If they can even do that. Because with the way it looks in most of this book, it may not happen. And what pains me, is that two people who finally get to be with someone they’ve needed for so long, is caught up in all this drama because of who they are. I mean, Doc has always and probably will be a hard person. He has high standards and I get that sometimes for some people it’s too much because they feel like they are always being picked on. But because Doc is so tightly bound because of his past, he often comes across harsher than necessary or harsher than he may mean sometimes. Not often. He’s hard for a reason, but at times yes. And Wren finally gets someone who gets him. But with everything collapsing again around them, it’s just too much for everyone and getting ridiculous. I’m hoping with the next book, things will finally start to really and truly settle for good. We will have to see.
