Michael Bourgeon is a talented artist, young and gorgeous, a stinking rich heir from a well-connected family. He’s the infamous libertine behind the most extravagant parties in Manhattan, and his exploits often lead to juicy tabloid stories. Enjoying his wealth and freedom to the fullest, Michael has the world at his feet.
Until someone tries to kill him. Repeatedly. After a security breach among his own staff, he has run out of options where to hide while the FBI hunts the killer.
A high-profile private security expert Vincent Nowak is supposed to provide the miracle solution. And while Michael struggles with nightmares and anxiety due to the looming threat, Vincent becomes not only the ultimately reliable protector, but a wonderful distraction, too…
A small cabin in the woods, a cocky brat with a soft heart, his gruff, controlling bodyguard, and weeks of tension in a confined space.
REVIEW:
Although I usually love Roe Horvat’s work (The Layover, for example, earned five stars/hearts from me), I disliked Cabin Fever. This book is about sex, sex, more sex, and a whole lot of sex. Which is fine for the erotica genre but this should be erotic romance where the overall focus is the story and how the main characters fall in love on a basis other than their need for sex. In erotica, the story would be severely impacted without the sex and, in this case, it would be a very short story. I enjoy graphic sex, kink, and dirty talk in my reads, but I need it around a significant plot. To me, Cabin Fever provides more of a framework around the sex.
As the story goes, Michael is a rich, horny brat who has had threats to his life, so a bodyguard, Vincent, is brought in to protect him. They retreat to a secluded safe house in the woods. It’s only after weeks in the woods together – and nearly sixty percent through the book – before they even discuss the case and possible suspects.
I found the story thin and completely predictable. The one-dimensional characters weren’t overly likable and had very little backstory and development. Michael’s bratty attitude grated on my nerves. And I wasn’t sold on the love that develops between these two men who appear to have a relationship based only on sex.
As a work of erotica, Cabin Fever is a success: titillating, kinky, lots of dirty talk, and a Daddy/boy dynamic with Michael earning lots of punishment (rewards). I do like that Horvat writes strongly sex-positive books. There’s no shame in the explicit sex, the kink, or the frequency between consenting adults. I also love the cover. But it is not a book for me. There’s just not enough substance.
