REVIEW:
As the adventures continue, Jander, Andrei, and the rest of the group have just finished their trip over the sea and now have a new quest – find the volcano where the dark mage Kirin is further plotting his evil magic to take over the kingdom. Will they be able to find it? Will Jander further hone his skills with communicating with dragons? What are Kirin’s ultimate plans?
This books starts immediately after Seadrake and it’s a roller coaster ride the whole way through. Whereas the former novel has a lot of discussions and theory, this book takes all of it in practice to continue their adventure in the final push to stop Kirin from whatever plans he has concocted. And we finally get back to Kirin with some really intriguing insights and we get to understand better some of his thoughts and feelings. It’s always makes a better story when a ‘villain’ is a more rounded character so we can begin to understand his motives, though they are not very noble ones. We get to see some of the deeper reasons for his actions and that he might even have some regrets? A thread from the last book is also picked up in Daryn, who is almost Kirin’s apprentice and an interesting contrast to Jander.
As Jander is still trying to find his way as a dragon mage, he has to do some fast learning in this part of their adventures. We don’t feel as much of his inner angst this time but he’s maturing quickly with lots of challenges thrown at him. The foursome that make up the group are a good combination – really balanced, helping each other out in unique ways. They are an intriguing lot as they work to try to stop Kirin. It’s been an incredible journey they’ve traveled and we’ve only gotten one more book to go. It feels like it’s been fast but also taken forever. A good series always makes you want to read the next book and the last book can’t come soon enough!
