How Rewritten’s cover came to be.
I take a lot of time looking for cover photos. I spent weeks looking for the photo for Unscripted. I was in love with another photo and we couldn’t make it work for the cover. It was shot landscape instead of portrait and with how close up it was there was no way to make both models fit on the cover. So we searched the same models and ended up finding another shoot they did and the picture was perfect for the love I knew had to come across for Quell and Hale.
But with Rewritten I had no idea what we were going to do to get the same feel from the models. I wanted another couple, and I wanted to see the love between the two of them which is really hard to find in gay stock photos. There are not a lot of options.
Then a few months ago in my group, a reader posted some lovely photos of a model. I was instantly in love with Kyle’s look and asked her for a link to his Instagram. I went and followed and soon after followed Kyle’s boyfriend Kurt. From the moment I saw them together, I thought they would be perfect as Quell and Hale. Every photo they posted together I could feel their love for each other shining through.
Through a little social media stalking, (laughs) I figured out Kyle takes a lot of his own photos and a lot of the photos of him and Kurt together. I kept sending photos of him to my cover artist and we agreed privately they were perfect. So she contacted them to see if we could buy a photo. They were so excited about the prospect. We talked back and forth. We found out they love to read. They read a ton of LGBT books. It was the perfect fit. So Kerry and I were going through their feed, and Kyle was sending us photos he’d already taken to look at, when he told us he and Kurt were social distancing together and asked if there was something we’d like them to try and recreate to let him know. We found a few ideas and they ran with it.
Let me tell you, the photos they sent us were to die for. We were blown away. I have never seen a couple able to show their love for each other so intensely on film. I could write entire books about the way Kurt and Kyle look at each other. Kerry and I had a hard time picking a photo. We looked at them for hours trying to decide.
I think we picked the right photo for the cover but it was hard. I love the smile on Kyle’s face. But I will link to the other photos Kyle has posted so everyone can see what Kerry and I were dealing with trying to choose.
They have been so fantastic to work with.
Unscripted Blurb
Movie star 101: A smile hides all pain.
Quellcrist King has been playing a part his entire life. The more famous he becomes, the more he hides. The only person he ever let see the real him rose with him from nothing to the very top.
They were the king and queen of Hollywood— and then she wanted a divorce. The only way to survive his depression is to bury himself in work. If he can be a character, maybe he won’t have to remember himself. A gay role can’t be any different than playing a straight one, can it?
But instead of finding solace in the character, he finds it in his costar. Hale becomes his best friend, his lifeline, the light in his darkness. Quell is forced to examine everything he thought he knew about himself while filming intimate scenes with Hale that feel more real than anything ever has before.
He’s lived his entire life following the script. What would life be like unscripted?
Rewritten Blurb
Movie star 102: The headlines are never what they seem.
Quellcrist wasn’t new to fame or the effect it had on a relationship. He’d been married in the spotlight for as long as he’d been famous. But that was before Hale. He knew it was going to test him but even he hadn’t known the toll that months apart would take on his fledgling relationship.
Long days of shooting, different time zones, calls every day dwindled to days without calls, and rumors were all over the rags. Through it all Quell had to battle his own worst enemy but he didn’t know how to win against something inside him. Depression ate him whole and pain took over.
There was so much more at stake than losing his boyfriend, he was losing his best friend. His lifeline, the love of his life. Was there any way to come back from the damage done?
Can they rewrite their ending?

I love books in a sequel and always try to read them back to back. I just finished ‘unscripted’ and am ready to start ‘rewritten.’ Thank you for the background on choosing the cover. I agree totally. They definitely let their love show visually!
Your stories always touch my heart.
This sounds so friggin good, and the couple! How gorgeous they are! Much success, JR.
