Relationships aren’t rocket science. If they were, I might stand a chance of figuring one out.
Elijah
Saying I’ve had a crush on my best friend’s older brother, Pax, most of my life is like saying the big bang was just an explosion. It’s true, but I’m not sure that quite captures the essence of its true enormity.
I know he’s only hanging out with me because I’m new in town and getting my PhD doesn’t leave me with much time to make friends. And even if it did, my strength is mathematics, not friend-making. What I don’t understand is why he kissed me…why he seems to want to keep kissing me. I don’t think my advanced physics knowledge is going to help me figure this one out. But I think for once I’m okay with not knowing, as long as Pax and I don’t know together.
Pax
He’s still the awkward Nerdlet I remember…he’s also probably the cutest, most tempting man I’ve laid eyes on. I know I should keep my hands off him, but this thing between us is like a force of nature. I want to be his first everything. He says we’re nothing more than atoms crashing into each other. I’m no scientist but I don’t think either of us are braced for the explosion.
REVIEW:
A math nerd and a best friend’s older brother! Some might think that this is so cliché but the truth is, it happens more often than not! It is not so surprising as one might think because we usually spend more time with our best friend, in his house or ours, that we can’t help but be close to the other members of the family. It is natural progression therefore one could start to crush on someone. It happened to me so I am speaking from experience.
Some people are comfortable doing one thing as compared to doing other things. Elijah, apart from his best friend Theo, has always felt like nobody sees him. He is used to being alone until he meets Theo and they become best friends in middle school. Now he is in another state to pursue his PhD while Theo is on another part of the country. It is daunting to think of making new friends as he has never been comfortable with that. But he has to start it sometime, right? Theo can’t be with him all the time.
Paxton, Theo’s older brother, receives a call from his younger brother telling him that Elijah is in California pursuing his PhD and he has requested Pax to take him out to show him the city. Theo tells him that if left on his own, Elijah might never come out of his room except for classes. So Pax takes him out for drinks and they get to talking. He never has realized how attractive Elijah is in a nerdy kind of way, his mind is stuck on a young version who is best friends with his younger brother. He has always liked his younger brother’s best friend but seeing Elijah now as an adult is making him realize a few things.
As they become closer, Elijah realizes that his lack of knowledge when it comes to making friends and having a boyfriend is hindering him from a lot of things, especially now that his best friend is in another state. Aside from Pax, he made only one other friend from his classes, Alex. He also realized that maybe Pax can teach him how to flirt and eventually find someone to hook up with or even a boyfriend. They go out a few times with the aim of teaching and learning to navigate the friends and dating scene. But things start to change and the attraction simmering just below the surface cannot be contained anymore. They agree that everything will just be casual. That they can call it off anytime. But then feelings become a factor.
When everything starts to unravel, especially when Theo learns about the situation, Pax has to decide whether he is willing to finally admit how he feels toward Elijah and to not be afraid of going into a relationship once again. He has had a significant but failed relationship before and he is afraid of doing the same mistakes again.
It is the first time I have listened to Mr. Zachary Zaba and he sounds amazing. Not only was he able to bring the characters to life but also the depth of feelings that each character convey on the book can be heard clearly through each word he utters. His voice for Elijah is so good that you can hear the hesitancy and the naivety of the young man. Voicing different characters and being consistent with it throughout the whole book is a huge feat to accomplish. An amazingly good listen. Congratulations!
