REVIEWED by Jay V.
AUTHOR: Logan Grey
SERIES: Heartbelt Records #3
PUBLISHER: Self Published
RELEASE DATE: June 2, 2020
BLURB:
After years of hustling their music and uploading vlogs, Jayce and Blaine have finally landed the record deal of a lifetime.
When the label gets a taste of their chemistry on screen, the album vision is changed from a lyrical tale of two friends to one of a budding romance.
And that’s not all.
Even when the cameras stop rolling, Jayce and Blaine are expected to sell their new story.
The thing is, for Jayce, it’s a little too easy to play the role of ‘boyfriend’ instead of ‘best friend’, until he realizes it’s not pretend at all.
With a life-long friendship and life-changing careers on the line, they’ll have to put their feelings aside and fake it ‘til they make it, or watch their dreams go up in flames.
REVIEW:
Jayce and Blaine, best friends for years, have been on a journey of creating music and vlogs that they hope will thrill their fans. They’ve been picky about signing with a label, but Heartbelt Records seems the perfect choice. The two are so close that the fans have been questioning if they are just friends. How do they really feel about each other? It’s fun to tease their audience but with so much at stake now that their careers are set to take off, will they get closer or come apart?
A stand-alone in the series, this book is a fun ride with slight ties back to the other books but one does not need to read the others. I’ve said this in my review of book two that there is a wonderful epilogue at the end of that novel that sets up this story. If you don’t read that section, you’ll still be able to read this book by itself without getting lost but you’ll miss out on a bit of their discovery.
What the book really has going for it are the characters are just so like-able and genuine. Their best friend chemistry is off the charts. With a mash up of different tropes, Grey manages to move beyond the usual to create a fun and joyous ride for the two. They’re on the cusp of hitting it big, but they’ve got to sort their own personal lives in the process. And navigate how to appear to their fans while their own inner turmoil swirls.
I have to compare this to the other two books in that this one has a better balance of story with some conflict and some really sweet sections without being too saccharine. You get a real sense that these friends truly care for each other unconditionally. There’s a section with a sex scene in the middle that is a bit too long and brings you out of the story, but it’s a small part and doesn’t mar the rest of the book. This is a promising continuation of the series and I’m excited to see where it goes in the future, as there’s unlimited possibility with new artists to be signed to Heartbelt plus the extremely slow burn of its owners. Let’s see what happens next.
