FROM CHAPTER THREE (TRAVIS):
Travis froze, staring at the knob, expecting it to turn—and suddenly, he wasn’t in California. He was back in Holdengate, inside the inn, playing music again for the first time and pretending he didn’t know Bailey was just outside the door. He was on edge, and instead of fear trickling in, an innocent excitement had taken over as he waited for the door to open. Hope filled him like a balloon, his chest expanding with a breath and pausing as he waited, waited—and just like so many months ago, the footsteps retreated moments later. Travis released a breath he hadn’t even been aware he was holding, and slumped down on the bed. Disappointment crashed over him like cold water, and he slammed his head onto the bed a few times in frustration.
He couldn’t even compartmentalize his own emotions. Had he wanted Bailey to open the door, or leave him in peace? Did he want to talk to Bailey or pretend for two more months that they’d been nothing?
The sound of the bus door clanging open and closed punctuated the question.
His chest tightened at the thought, and Travis smacked a hand against his chest.
Nothing?
No… they hadn’t been nothing, and they never would be.
