FIVE FAKE DATES MAKE FOR ADORABLE AUDIO
I’m super excited to be here to talk about the FIVE FAKE DATES audiobook, because I can fangirl about this without looking like I’m bragging on myself (hopefully!).
When I came up for the premise of Five Fake Dates, I never would have imagined it’d make it into audio. I wrote it for a group promotion. I really had no goal other than to write a short story with a fake dating theme. I started one story, discarded it because I wasn’t really happy, when out of the blue I heard West’s voice speaking to me.
Adam and West, the two mc’s, are best friends and college roommates. West has long had a crush on Adam’s sister, but after a drunken kiss that was the result of a dare, he’s starting to question his feelings. Meanwhile, Adam is dreading watching his friend and his sister hook up. He doesn’t think West even remembers the kiss, much less suspect he might be re-evaluating their relationship.
With friendship in the balance, West comes up with a genius idea — his words, not mine — to convince Adam to help him “practice” dating so that he can woo Hannah, when really he intends to woo his best friend.
This was one of those easy-to-write stories, one of the ones that just flow without hardship. The characters have strong voices and personalities, especially West. I found myself smiling as I wrote, even as I thought, “Is this too cute?”
Spoiler alert: It’s very cute.
But readers loved it, and when I heard the audio by Darcy Stark, I finally got the chance to experience that enjoyment. Because hearing Darcy voice Adam and West brought them to life in new and interesting ways. I had my own vision for the characters, but Darcy brought his vision and experience to the performance, and it absolutely enhanced the story, giving the characters depth that I, their creator, hadn’t even seen (or heard).
I’m not a regular audio fan, so this was an aha moment for me. I could finally understand and relate to audio fans. Because Five Fake Dates on audio put a huge smile on my face. It made me laugh and blush and sigh.
Darcy Stark turned in a great performance, and I couldn’t have been more happy with the result! I hope you, too, will enjoy Five Fake Dates. Today, I’ve brought a file of Chapter 1 so you can have a little preview of the great work Darcy did!

Five Fake Dates
Adam
I’ve got it bad for my best friend, but he’s only had eyes for my sister since we were kids. I don’t know what I’ll do if they hook up — especially after a drunken kiss West doesn’t seem to remember. Seeing them together just might kill me, so why I offer to help him hone his dating skills, I’ll never know. FML.
West
Ever since a drunken kiss we haven’t talked about, I’ve been seeing Adam in a new light. Trouble is, he thinks I want his sister. This whole bisexual awakening thing is scary, and I don’t want to risk our friendship by moving too fast. But when Adam mocks my dating skills, I come up with a genius plan: Five Fake Dates. Adam thinks he’s helping me, and I get to test the waters without risking our friendship. Win-win!
A few fake dates, increasingly real kisses, and a tiny deception between friends. What could go wrong?
