BLURB:
Wolfe Koa grew up knowing only pain. As a newborn wolf Shifter he was placed in a lab where every experiment known to man was inflicted on him. When he was finally freed, he vowed to destroy every lab the humans had built to torture paranormals in the name of science.
Caleb Reid was a scientist who loved helping others. When his own race, the Psy, kidnapped him and forced him to create a breed of super soldiers, humans that were infused with animal and Shifter DNA, Caleb rebelled. His act of defiance had his father’s finger cut off with the threat of the same happening to his four-year-old sister. Not having a choice, Caleb did the unthinkable and gave in to the Psy’s demands.
When Wolfe realizes Caleb is his mate, he fights the need to be with him. Can Wolfe overcome the mate pull or will he end up mating his worst nightmare?
REVIEW:
I had to take a while to write this review. Not because it’s a bad story. Far from it. But because there were so conflicting emotions for me. I understood what both of these two were feeling so much, and why they acted the way they did. And in one minute, I wanted to shake them both and in the other, I wanted to hug them and tell them it’s ok. Even with what Wolfe did, I got why he did it. Because it was more than just revenge, it was his way of expressing how he really felt about his mate.
Caleb is everything that Wolfe can’t stand in a person. With being imprisoned in labs himself when he was younger, what Caleb does conflicts with everything Wolfe feels. But he knows deep in his heart this is his mate and he would do anything for him. But he can’t get past what Caleb is doing and NO ONE is telling him why. It’s when the truth starts coming out, that the trouble really begins. At first Wolfe is ok with it, but it’s not until they are safe and Caleb wants to go back to work, doing what he is really meant to do. Not forced to do. And because of it, all Wolfe’s old feelings come crawling up and he can’t get past in all and runs. But what he’s doing on the run is not only causing a problem with them being separated, he’s causing problems with the Alliance itself. And now Alek has no choice but to be involved. But with all that’s happening, it’s going to take a miracle to get past all that has happened and been done.
I can’t get into too much without giving the story away, but it really is a hard story to read at times, because you’re crying or raging or wanting to shake someone. Caleb is forced to do what he has to do, he doesn’t want to do it. He HAS to. Or the consequences are dire. But at least with his gifts, he can do it in a way that is less harmful for the victims. And with Wolfe’s background, I get why he’s conflicted with his mate. But he’s not really listening and understanding, it’s not a choice for Caleb. And with no one telling him what’s going on, he’s thinking all sorts of things on his own. As for Caleb, he wants to believe this mating is true and Wolfe really cares for him, but he knows Wolfe’s past and it’s a constant argument for them. It’s when Wolfe runs, that it kills Caleb to admit that maybe this once, the fates got it wrong. But Wolfe does something stupid. And yes, it’s endangering to the Alliance for it’s reasons. But it’s also the only way Wolfe can show Caleb, other than sex, how much he cares about him. In the only way he knows how.
It’s so conflicting. It’s one heck of a story, but it’s hard for these two. Communication, of course, would help so much here, but as usual, no one seems to want to truly listen to what’s going on and that’s a part of the communication that always seems to be missing. Everyone’s talking and no one is listening. But it makes for one heck of a story. And I love it.
