BLURB:
After much deliberation, Andrei chooses to bring his inexperienced and highly unusual apprentice to the faroff island of Sutan-lei, where the eminent mage-scholar Master Luth is rumored to abide. It is Andrei’s hope that Master Luth will have answers to the growing mystery he and Jander began to uncover in the city of Tempest as well as help his apprentice gain some degree of mastery over his unique–and highly unpredictable–prowess in the magic. But even as they struggle to piece together the puzzle in front of them, their enemy is close behind them every step of the way–and he is determined not to let the two of them get in his way.
REVIEW:
Jander, the mage apprentice, is still working to understand his talents. Andrei, his mentor and partner, feels that traveling to an island in the ocean where a wise mage-scholar lives will help them understand the battles ahead. The now foursome, Boaen and Tanith having joined the group, adventure on to the island, but there’s a sea dragon that is terrorizing both the island and the mainland. Can they learn all they need? Will they be able to deal with this new dragon on their journeys?
Seadrake continues the adventures of the dragon mage-apprentice. This is considered book 2 but there’s a prequel that I highly recommend you start if you are not up on this great series. Being more of a transitional book, we get a chance to learn more about dragons, their purpose in the world, and get a deeper insight in to dragon mages. The information is not without some enigma but it’s part of the journey that they all must go through to help save their world.
This book is somewhat short of the battles, but it’s a vital piece in the storytelling as we get a better understanding of all the characters, including some very important understanding of dragon mages and Kirin’s motives to destroy everything he can, including Andrei and Jander. Jaken continues her consistent world-building and we keep peeling the onion on the magic that rules this universe. We also get some backstory on several of the major characters that begins to fill out some reasons for motives and feelings each of the characters posses.
I’m in it for the long haul as I really love these books and am so fascinated on how Jaken will take us through the rest of the adventures. There’s two more books to go and I have a feeling we’re going to learn a lot more about all the characters and their journeys. Kirin is truly an evil character and I’m so curious to see where Jaken will take him – he’s really got an extremely dark heart. Jaken’s growth has been slow but a journey he needs to take to help the world out. Enjoy these books as we all need a break from reality.
