BLURB:
When rodeo cowboy Seth’s best friend dies unexpectedly from cancer, he finds himself taking on a ranch and a bunch of his friend’s younger siblings, because they have nowhere else to turn. Seth loves those kids like they’re his own, and he settles in well to his new life, which is why he’s pretty wary when his buddy’s older brother finally makes it home from a long stint in the military.
Law knows he might get a chilly reception at his brother Pistol’s old ranch, even if the kids living there are his half-siblings. He didn’t make it to his brother’s funeral, after all, but to his credit, he was blown up trying to come home to do just that. He’s fighting injuries and insecurity, but when Seth welcomes him to the family ranch, Law knows he’s pretty much in love. Even if he thinks Seth was his brother’s lover. Can these two find a way to let their emotions out before tragedy strikes their family again?
REVIEW:
Sooooo that was a heavy start for sure and it left me a bit unsettled. However, I understood it was to set the story off…and what a story!
This was exactly what I needed. It’s low angst with family, kindness, friends, bonding and love in different forms.
You have to love and respect Seth for what he put himself to do. He’s trying to make good on the promise to his young friend and taking care of his family for him. Giving them a home and loving care.
Throw in some Law in the mix and you definitely got a whole lot of family goodness. Sure Seth and Law need to warm up towards each other, which is logical because of the circumstances as mentioned in the blurb, but it is wonderful to read Law settling in to their family household.
Of course there are some things, like the way how Seth and Law kind of stumbled to love you’s etc that would have been nice to read a bit more personal involvement there but it didn’t take away from the overall enjoyment of the story.
There is low angst but there is a shock happening that turns the family upside down. But it also brings out the best in Law and especially all their friends and community, which I absolutely loved
I noticed myself wanting to keep reading and see what else would happen and being a bit disappointed that where there is some talk about thanksgiving we didn’t get that at all in the story.
The story just finished with a quick epilogue and for me the ending therefore felt rushed. I so had wanted to read more there.
I do hope that author BA Tortuga, who is known for a great storytelling and writing style, treats us to a bit more in this world she created and will tell us what is going on with Law his army buddies who joined them for the holidays…and more…
Overall this is a wonderful, well written contemporary ranch story about found family, finding love and life in unexpected places which I definitely recommend if you like those kind of stories like me
