BLURB:
Fresh out of college with a chemistry degree, Tim Ratliff’s desperate to move out on his own. He yearns for his own home, his own rules, and the freedom to find the kind of man he’s always dreamed of for his first time. Tim’s applied at every laboratory he can find, but his job search is coming up crickets.
Monument Pharma would be his dream job, and Lorraine in Human Resources swears he’s a shoo-in to be hired. Wonderful, except that’s the one job he dare not take.
At thirty-three, Carson Eddinger’s life is just about perfect—a great position at Monument Pharma, nice home, sweet ride—except for the no boyfriend part. And the constant sniping from the woman in Human Resources.
She isn’t just a thorn in Carson’s side at work—she’s also Tim’s mom, and she has a white picket fence plan for Tim that definitely doesn’t involve a happy ever after with Carson.
They’ve poked the bear. Now they have to outrun it.
REVIEW:
The first thing I’d like to do is apologize to the author. I took this book to review and the world went to hell in a handbasket. I work in a grocery store and I’ve been putting in some pretty long hours. Do this review was the last thing on my mind and I’m very sorry about that. Things are calming down now and so here I finally am.
Tim is sweet and kind and doing his best to be the son his parents want. Deep down inside though, he knows it’s not possible and is planning making a run for it. If only he could get a job!
Carson just wants to do his best a work and stay out trouble with the dragon lady. But when Tim stumbles into his life, he has to decide if the adorable young man is worth going up against his nemesis.
I had a hard time getting into this book, but I think that was probably more about life in general than the book. Once I got into it, I’m so glad I kept at it.
I like Tim…mostly. He’s sweet and a generally good person. He’s trying hard to make a life for himself despite the interference of his mother. I did spend a good deal of time annoyed with him though. I get his reasoning for his stand on things, but man, I wanted to smack him a couple of times for his willful…denial.
Carson? He’s an angel. With a little bit of devilish charm. He has had to fight to have a good life and bringing Tim into it could really mess it up. But he does it anyway.
The author did a great job of showing the struggle both men go through to be together. There’s some pretty angsty spots and I was moved to tears more than once.
On a personal note, Tim’s mother should be ran over with a lawnmower…just saying.
This is not the first story of P.D. Singer’s that I’ve enjoyed but it sure reminded me of why I like them.
There is a unique voice to some authors and Singer is definitely one of them. The writing is well done, the editing almost perfect. I could see the places that Tim and Carson live quite vividly, so the author paints a pretty damn good picture.
It wasn’t perfect. Like I said, Tim grated on my nerves some, and it dragged a little in the middle, but all in all, it’s an enjoyable read. There are sympathetic characters, it doesn’t rush too much and the ending is believable.
Oh, and my third fav character is an old teacher of Carson’s who has the best advice and the best cookies!
