The hunt is on to find the last of Marcus Maze’s robots and destroy information he may have left behind after his death. Black and Calyx are interested in the robot, but they soon cross paths with forces who allege to be on their side and are following a different lead: betrayal within the JCPD. As layers of secrets are peeled back and friends become foes, Black and Calyx face the growing possibility that the end of the line–war between normals and psypaths–is finally here.
REVIEW: This story continues to evolve as Black struggles to fight with Dickerson, the things that happened in the past, and the unfolding and seemingly eminent war between the psypaths and the normal. All of this is happening while Black is dealing with his lack of psy powers which, if the condition becomes common knowledge, who knows what could happen.
There is much more betrayal from different angles, and as with previous installments, there are steps backward to go along with the steps taken forward. Same goes for Calyx and Black. Their relationship has never been easy, and that hasn’t changed. Black has never sugar coated the way he is or his actions, although you can see how he feels for Calyx and shows it in the only way he knows. Calyx, on the other hand, has committed to seeing things through with Black and to stand by him through thick and thin.
This is book 11 in this series, and you are fully invested at this point, if you have stuck with it this long. I have really enjoyed this world and the characters we have met along the way. It’s a wonderful paranormal different than the usual. While it didn’t pack quite the excitement or suspense as previous installments, it was a solid addition nonetheless. I know I am committed to see it through to the end and can’t wait for the next one!
