HE MUST MASTER THE WOLF WITHIN…
Edinburgh, 1820. Thirty years after leaving Scotland, Drew Nicol is forced to return when the skeleton of a monster is found. The skeleton is evidence of werewolves—evidence that Marguerite de Carcassonne, the leader of Drew’s pack, is determined to suppress.
Marguerite insists that Drew accompany her to Edinburgh. There they will try to acquire the skeleton while searching for wolf-hunters—wolf hunters who may be holding one of their pack prisoner.
But Drew has reason to be wary about returning to Edinburgh—Lindsay Somerville now lives there.
Lindsay who taught Drew about desire and obsession.
Lindsay who Drew has never been able to forgive for turning him.
Lindsay who vowed to stay away from Drew twelve years ago… and who has since taken drastic steps to sever the bond between them.
Marguerite’s plan will throw Drew and Lindsay together again—and into a deadly confrontation with Lindsay’s enemy, Duncan MacCormaic. They will be tested to their limits and forced to confront both their past mistakes and their true feelings.
But it may be too late for them to repair the damage of the past. The consequences of Lindsay’s choices are catching up with him, and he’s just about out of time…
REVIEW:
Note: This is the second book in this duology and these two books should be read in order.
This book begins 32 years after the events of Gentleman Wolf. We find reluctant werewolf Drew Nicol in London having become an indispensable and very successful businessman in the service of his pack. He is still restless with his wolf and he does not like to shift, nor does he like his bond to Lindsay, his maker. He’s not sure why he’s feeling so itchy ahead of the full moon. But he’s about to find out when discovers an unexpected visitor.
As Marguerite and Drew head to Edinburgh, the scene of Drew’s birth and rebirth as a wolf, Drew is shocked to learn that Lindsay is also there. He’s also wary because of communications with Marguerite are a bit cryptic about Lindsay’s well being. For his part, Lindsay is more than shocked when he does see Drew for the first time in 12 years since their last confrontation and his vow to stay away from Drew. Neither is particularly thrilled with the current state of affairs, but Lindsay is trying to abide by his word. It’s just that his solution is more than Drew had ever thought possible.
Wynne, Lindsay’s faithful servant, friend and personal witch, has regretfully helped Lindsey in his pursuit. Drew and more importantly, his wolf are extremely unhappy with Lindsey’s solution. They are also extremely fearful of Duncan MacCormaic’s pursuit of Lindsay and the potential for extreme violence. All have vowed to keep Lyndsay safe from Duncan.
There is also the little detail of Cruikshank’s skeleton being discovered as evidence of the last time Drew and Lindsay were in Edinburgh and that evidence must be hidden. In addition, Marguerite is certain that she is close to finding the one thing she has been searching for for centuries. And when the penultimate confrontation occurs, it’s all hands on deck to save Lindsay and preserve the safety of the wolves. Unfortuantely that can’t be achieved without some loss 🙁 But at the end of the day, the truth is finally set free and love triumphs!
Oh the feels!! This story hits them all. I absolutely adored this book. It literally has everything – heart pounding moments, beautiful tender moments, grief and despair, serenity and resolve. I couldn’t have asked for more in this conclusion. Once again, we FEEL Lindsay’s longing for Drew and his ultimate acceptance of Drew’s wishes. This novel moves back and forth from the current timeline to the various interactions of Lindsay and Drew since the bite. These time-jumps are quite clear as they take place at the chapter beginnings and are noted by both date and location. I was not confused at all and it very much set up the current action. The author brilliantly conveys the longing, the desire, the grief, the love of all the characters in this story – from Drew and Lindsay as well as the secondary characters. Brilliantly done and highly recommended!
