In a dangerous world, Mason Kane knows what it’s like to lose everything.
There’s no interview to become a hunter—mercenary drifters who deal with monsters and dark magic the average person can’t handle. Those who have it in their blood show up when the bounty is posted and claim the rewards only when the job is done.
Mason Kane couldn’t imagine any other life for himself…until his last job, one which left him alone and injured beyond natural help. Lost, he moved to the city to drink away his retirement and wallow until his eventual death. That is, until an enigmatic millionaire approaches him with a job offer—someone, somewhere is practicing one of the forbidden arts, devilurgy, and only Mason can stop them. What’s more, the stranger is willing to offer the ultimate reward: a cure.
With the help of a handsome and charming magician, Toma Shigomina, Mason has to learn not only who’s selling the mysterious sigils, but how—and why. But, when it comes to dark magic, nothing is as it seems. Will Mason be able to solve the mystery and keep the people he cares about safe? And what, exactly, are his new employer’s motivations?
REVIEW:
I can not wait to read the next book in this series. For real. This book kept me captivated from the minute I started reading to the last page. Then I wanted to cry, because I really need more. There are so many things in play in this book, that you can’t help but be caught up in the story. There’s a hunter who’s been turned into one of the things he hunts, there’s mystery, intrigue, loss of loves, death, spies, secrets and lies. And someone behind the scenes who is controlling things. One that’s not visible yet, and one that is. And that one wants to keep Mason under lock and key for some reason. And I want to know why.
Mason has more or less decided it’s time for him to leave. And not physically move. He’s basically counting down the days of his death. He wants to end it all. He’s lost everything that ever meant anything to him when he lost his lover and partner that fateful night and he lost himself as well, as he was injured and poisoned in the hunt. There’s a way to cure him, but it’s expensive and hard to find, and after losing the love of his life, what’s the point anyway. But someone has been watching him. Several someones. Their reasons are unknown. Only so much they are giving up to Mason as they are trying to hire him for a job. He agrees, only for the fact he could be cured. But the boss man, has different ideas and has worded things where now Mason is trapped. And Mason doesn’t even know what all is really going on. All he knows is he’s found a purpose again and a possible new lover. But Mason doesn’t realize he’s basically a pawn being moved on a chessboard. And those who know the moves, aren’t telling a thing. And it’s up to Mason to find out what’s going on.
I do NOT like Mason’s new ‘boss’. He is a dirtbag of the highest order. No lie. He is holding things close to his chest and lying about what is going on and what he is going to give Mason. He implied he was going to give Mason what he needed in order to be free of his curse, and then changed the rules. So I’m hoping Mason figures out what’s going on and gets his butt. Mason has been through enough. He doesn’t need the added crap. And it hurts my heart for him. His story is heartbreaking, to say the least. It’s a hard story to read. And when dealing with feral or rogue beings in any story, you know it’s not going to be a pretty picture. But what pains me the most in this, is that Mason is slowing starting to move forward in his life again. After a sliver of hope has entered his life. And when you read, you’ll see what I mean. I’m pissed for him, because the way things are worded, he’s being set up. And oh man, that’s going to stink a big one if what happens is what I think is going to happen. I hope not.
I don’t want to give it away and I hope I haven’t. But I hope I’ve given you enough to tell you, you really need to read this. There’s a lot going on, and it will keep you intrigued. Well, it did me. But I love paranormal stuff so I’m a happy camper. But it’s more than just paranormal. Like I said, there’s mystery and so much more going on. And though, there’s not a cliffhanger, per se, it’s definitely set up to make you want the next book, like now. So I’m hoping another one is coming and soon.
