REVIEW:
Trey is a superstar quarterback. Twenty years ago, he left the small town of Avery to follow his dream. A dream he was to embark on with the love of his life Jordan. Everything was planned, but Jordan didn’t show. Heartbroken Trey worked hard, played hard, stayed in the closet and never got over what he believed to be Jordan’s betrayal.
The class reunion loomed, and Trey was being forced by his publicist to return and donate to his high school. Trey had vowed never to return. Indeed, since the day he left, he’s not set foot in Avery. With contracts on the line, Trey caves and goes back
Jordan is a Math teacher at Avery high school. Twenty years ago, young, nerdy and in love with the school sports star, the two made secret plans to be together forever. Unfortunately, fate was not Jordan’s friend. The two lived in a time when coming out of the closet shut down careers. Events forced Jordan to make a decision that broke his heart. Letting Trey go was a choice that Jordan stands by and has paid a price for. He believes in it to the point of trying to avoid Trey at the reunion and after. Again, fate in the form of a best friend intervenes.
The visit re-opens old wounds and brings to the fore unfinished business. Trey is determined to find out why Jordan was a no-show all those years ago.
When I review a book, I have word open so that I can make notes while reading. I found Just Jordan so engaging that the only note I made was that the story was written in the third person.
I am a fan of friends to lover’s tales, and this one is a keeper. It contains heartache of more than one kind, a small yet perfectly formed extended cast and writing that kept me turning the page. In short, I fell for these guys. They are good men, and not in a sickly way. In the past, I’ve read stories where there are definite favorites and the hero’s need halos. Not the case here. The author made Trey and Jordan wholesome, flawed and believable. They are stubborn, have disagreements, and keep secrets that need a crowbar to get to. As obstinate as Jordan is, Trey is equally determined.
There is a good balance between supporters and homophobes and not all of it revolves around Trey and Jordan. Jordan is out of the closet, but Trey soon realizes that given his standing, he must step up to the plate. Show others that if he can do it, so can they.
I could say more, give away spoilers (just look at the tags). But my best advice is – if you are a reader who loves friends to lovers’ stories – get this one.
