Jander Teregnan has succeeded in his ambition to become a mage-apprentice, but the troubles that face him are far from over. He and Andrei set out on their first mission together as mage and apprentice to investigate a mysterious series of dragon attacks near a provincial city at the edge of the kingdom, where Jander’s unique talents may particularly come into play. What they find there turns out to be far more devastating than a mere homicidal dragon, as they are caught up in a conspiracy that will threaten not only their own lives, but the lives of everyone in the kingdom they have sworn an oath to protect.
REVIEW:
Even though this is considered book one, the continuing adventure of the dragon apprentice, Jander Teregnan, starts with The Magician’s Apprentice. This novel, consider book one, has Jander settling in to his new role as apprentice (and lover) to his mentor, Andrei. He is going out on his first real assignment from his king.
Jander and Andrei must face some harrowing adventures to discover why the travelers by this town are under attack by a dragon. The young apprentice is still trying to adjust to his new skills and communicating with dragons. He is learning along the way. Things are not quite as they appear in the town and there are some surprises in store.
ThIs book is a wonderful adventure in the style of light fantasy. The world building is great but doesn’t get in the way of the understanding the storyline. Jaken is skilled in creating villains that are truly evil. The overall story arc is slightly predictable but how can you have sequels if the main characters perish? But there are some unusual twists that keep the story fresh.
Even if you haven’t read the prequel, you can dive right in to this book though you’ll miss the introduction of all the characters, especially Boaen, who has an interesting past that is only lightly touched on in this book. I look forward to how Jaken will take these characters meeting more dragons and keep the kingdom from being ultimately destroyed.
