Nick Ross was in love with Daniel years ago, when they were roommates in college. But Daniel was straight and Nick patched his broken heart by marrying Marcia. Two kids and fourteen years later, they go through the motions of their marriage like ships passing in the night. But Nick’s kids mean the world to him, and he’s afraid he’ll never get joint custody if they divorced. If he can trust his heart to an awakening Daniel, they all might find their way to a happily ever after.
REVIEW: This is a really nice friends to lovers story. Daniel and Nick are friends and business partners whose lives are pretty moving along in different paths. Daniel is the single, straight guy that Nick fell in love with in college. It’s because of this that Nick made the choice to marry Marcia. Their marriage isn’t necessarily a happy one. They’re pretty much together because of their children.
Daniel is faced with his own mortality after his father passed away and realized that he wasn’t really living his best life. Daniel decides on a plan of action to change that.
Nick is also not living his best life but unlike Daniel, he’s willing to stay in his situation for the sake of his children.
These two men balance each other out. Daniel’s pursuit of Nick is methodical. He was laser focused on changing the nature of his and Nick’s relationship. Nick, on the other hand was understandably reluctant to go take their relationship in the direction of lovers. He’s been in love with the man in college and he’s worried that Daniel is going through some things and is confused after the death of his father. Not only that, Nick is probably worries that Daniel May decide he wants to return to dating women. Nick also has everything to lose. His wife may try to use his kids to get back at him if he decides to pursue the relationship Daniel wants. There were many variables to making them being together.
While I’m not a fan of the gay/out for you theme, I decided to give this book try and was relived to see that it didn’t veer too far in that direction. I think that this book illustrates just how complex sexuality can be.
I think the message in this story is life is short and you only have one so live it as best as you possibly can by being as happy as you possibly can in it. That’s the best message of all and this author did a lovely job of delivering it.
