BLURB:
One night in a haunted house thrusts Andrew Hollenbeck into the center of a sixty-year-old curse. In his dreams, he meets a mysterious stranger named Caius. With each recurring dream, the connection between them grows. But it is one thing to fall for someone you cannot have, it is something else entirely to fall for a person who doesn’t exist. Or does he?
Details from Andrew’s dreams are seeping into reality, in the form of books he’s never seen before and a terrifying creature called the Snake. He wants to believe that Caius could be real too, but waking Caius with a kiss would only be the beginning of their story.
Caius is a sorcerer who cursed people in the past, and he’s been trapped in the dream as punishment for his crimes. Andrew doesn’t think Caius is evil, but if he were to awaken, would he be the charming man Andrew knows? Or a villain in disguise?
REVIEW:
I really enjoyed this story. It had subtle twists that kept me guessing and I read the entire book cover to cover without stopping.
In Ghost House: A Fairy Tale, Ms. Grey brings us to a college town and a common ‘dare’ to stay overnight in a rumored to be haunted house. When Andrew Hollenbeck and his friends decide to stay the night, the friends don’t see or hear anything. But something is different for Andrew. He is dreaming of this strange man named Caius. And the dreams don’t stop when he leaves the haunted house. Each dream becomes more real, as does Caius it seems.
But there is also an evil character showing up in his dreams that he calls the Snake. The being seems to be malevolent and out to get Andrew for something that happened to the being in the past. It is almost the end of book before we learn what/who the Snake really is and to be honest, I felt bad for him and the other victims. But I digress, back to the story.
Andrew finds out that Caius ran an all-male house of ill repute many years before and that he disappeared without a trace. But did he really? When Andrew investigates the haunted house more on his own, he not only encounters the Snake, but he also finds clues to where Caius went. While there, he also meets random men’s shadows, or spirits perhaps, that have one thing in common. They were all cursed by Caius, who it turns out had some sorcerous powers.
I can’t say much more without doing even more spoilers. If you enjoy a ghost story, and a mystery tied into one, then this one would be for you. As I said at the beginning, I thorough enjoyed it. I will definitely be keeping my eye open for further works from the author.
