BLURB:
Follow the law, or follow their hearts?
By-the-book Bo Schollenberger’s training to be the new boss at the Southeastern Narcotics Bureau. He’s always been the moral compass for his partner Lucky Lucklighter, or Simon Harrison, or whatever-the-hell his name is this week.
Lucky might have read the book, or parts of it, but toes the line between legal and… not so legal. A little moral elasticity lets him out-maneuver the bad guys. It’s not broke, why fix it?
They butt heads at work, but they’re rock solid at home, where their biggest concern is when, or if, they’ll become parents.
Their latest case puts them in a tailspin when drugs flood a local high school and someone hands Lucky’s nephew a vial of pills like they were candy. Unravelling the drug ring leads them straight into a nest of human trafficking, way outside the jurisdiction of the SNB, but no way could Bo and Lucky let the perpetrators leave Atlanta scot-free. No one gets away with harming innocents, especially family.
The letter of the law says to trust the legal system, but doing the right thing might lead them outside the lines.
Especially when the youngest trafficking victim lands squarely in Bo’s lap.
REVIEW:
I’ll start by repeating what I said in my review of the previous book in this series, I didn’t realize how much I missed Lucky and Bo until I had their latest adventure in my hot little hands. This series is truly one of my very favourite reads, and I urge anyone who has yet to dive into the world of Lucky Lucklighter and Bo Schollenberger to pick up a copy of Diversion (which is book #1) and get yourself lost in the world of the Southeastern Narcotics Bureau (or SNB, to those of us in-the-know). For those readers who, like me, are already mid-loveaffair with this couple, then make sure you’ve read the two short stories that precede book #8. I believe the links to the free reads can be found on the author’s website. The main reason you need to read these first is because one of the shorts is the story of what happened when Lucky finally met Bo’s family, family that make an appearance in Decision.
At this point in a series (book #8, and all focused on the same couple) sometimes I get the feeling that the author is grasping at ideas to keep the books going. However, I love the way that Eden Winters has managed to continue providing us with the work related shenanigans that we expect from these books, while evolving Bo and Lucky as a couple. As with the last book, their wider relationships with family and friends play a huge role here, which actually ties in perfectly with the personal growth of Lucky.
I don’t want to go into too much detail, because if you haven’t read the books it will make no sense anyway, and if you have, then Decision acts as an important turning point in this series going forward, and I don’t want to spoil what is going to happen.
I’m actually really excited about what the author intends for Lucky and Bo in the ninth book, while their path is fairly obvious I’d love to see how Ms. Winters tackles it. I mean, there’s still a bad guy on the loose, complicated drug rings to take down and I’m with Lucky – O’Donoghue is still on my radar as a possible bad guy. But two things remain certain when it comes to this series, Lucky and Bo will always be a solid unit, and Achy Breaky Heart should not be on any stripper’s play list…unless that stripper is an undercover agent named Bo Schollenberger.
